Timer for LED lights

  1. I just bought a Gavita 1700e led fixture (120v). The manual states -

"Ensure external switching gear can cope with the inrush of current of the fixture. Use a contactor suitable for switching a capacitive load. Never use household timers to switch the led fixture."

I presently use a household timer for my two 315 watt ceramic metal halide fixtures. It is a heavy duty household time rated for 15 amps and 1875 watts. The Gavita is 5.4 amps and 645 watts. Is there any reason why I can't use this timer that anyone knows of?

  3. The manufacturer's statement is probably legal ass-covering.
Although there might be an electrical surge when the light first comes on, your 1875 watt capability can probably handle it.
