Time to dispell some myths about bongs.

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by ßü††-맧, Oct 21, 2006.

  1. 1. Bongs give a cooler hit because water cools the smoke.
False, the amount of time smoke stays underwater is minimal. The smoke cools while it is in the chamber. Larger chamber = cooler smoke.

    2. Bongs filter the smoke to give a better hit.
False, the amont of smoke that is in contact with the water in almost immesurable. Water can be used to filter smoke but that is done by passing the smoke through a chamber full of sprayers, also know as a precipitator.

  2. Well, I for one, disagree with all your supposedly "dispelled myths." From all my research (which is a lot) I've found that these two so-called "myths" are not actually such and retain much truth in practice. That's an obvious benefit of perculators and diffused down stems, and of course ash catchers. To increase the time and surface area of smoke contact to the water. Do you even have any sources to prove your shit?

  3. yeah, i dont know if i buy into this.

  4. I donno about this one...

Try taking a hit out of a bong with no water in it. Totally different experience.

  5. The bulk of what the water does is to isolate you from larger particulate and ash which is a damn good thing.

  6. the first isnt a myth, its common sense. and your not entirely right. cooler water will bring the temp of smoke down. hit a bong with cool water and then one with room temp water. the hit is obviously cooler with cooler water. using ice cools the chamber more, and the cooler air cools the smoke (along with the ice itself, obviously).

the second is total BS. have u ever used a bong? really? if u smoke even a few times, the water starts to turn yellow. this is from tar and other chemicals being filtered out of the smoke. this is also why bong water smells so bad. diffusors help- "Instead of large bubbles rising through the water, the smoke diffuses into many small bubbles, thereby allowing for more filtration, a product of the increased total surface area." <-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roor

  7. Hit a bong without water. The smoke WILL be hotter. Case closed.

"The bulk of what the water does is to isolate you from larger particulate and ash which is a damn good thing."

    Sounds like filtering to me.

  8. Be nice, people!

  9. obviously you know little of chemistry.

if you've ever watched a chemical reaction take place, it doesn't take much time. the amount of air in each bubble of smoke is pretty small, and the surface area of the bubble (touching water) is pretty big. anyway, molecules move extremely fast when hot (aka smoke), so they are pretty efficiently cooled and filtered in the water, even if the time of contact is minimal.

  10. sorry reform, ill take it off.
