Thoughts on potency

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by starguy, Feb 7, 2023.

  1. I have been thinking about the potency of my products.,If the tincture extracts 80% of the goodies from the bud,.I am thinking the other 20% is still in the bud?,.And if this is correct does it mean that if I make an edible and I leave the product in it ,.such as brownies.,that they will have a higher percentage of the thc available from the bud.
I ask because I have been figuring my potency for the tincture at 80%.,Do you think that same amount of bud in peanutbudder or anything with the bud left in it should be rated higher.
    Thanks for looking.,

What brought you to the conclusion that an alcohol extraction only extracts 80% of the cannabinoids? More details would be needed. What type of alcohol, what type of process?

160 micron dry ice Kief unstrained. Yes I rate it 100%
    15 grams of Kief
    3 tablespoon of Coconut oil
    2 teaspoons Lecithin.

  4. Adding remnants to the batch can’t hurt but taste could vary.

  5. Many posts here have stated the 80% rate when extracting with 200proof ethanol.,Buds are guesstimated at 150mg of thc per gram.,also posted here.

  6. I asked a guy I know who does this sort of thing for a living and he said at home 80-85 percent is what he thought my tincture would be.

  7. There is a difference between extraction efficiency and destruction of cannabinoids. A refined efficient process will have less cannabinoid loss. See the link I posted above. The only way you are going to know with 100% certainty is to have your products tested. Pinpoint exact starting THC% and compare to post extraction.

  9. Mate, we're just making alcohol tinctures here and using 'em for all sorts of things. We're way past what you're talking about!

  10. Everyone has a tendency to want to take things up a notch
I don't focus on anything like leftover cannabinoids
The tincture/extraction gives me more for my dollar than vaping or combusting

The home testing kits are getting refined but are far from user friendly
So many variables it would drive you mad trying to attain a consistently high percentage
Trust your method and refine your process

  11. Yes, sweedright.,Those folks are a little above my pay grade. I'm having fun and getting high.,not making a living.,I could buy a little store bought to compare with mine.,probably not a bad idea if I want to share.
Thank you all for the replies.,

  14. I have started making my tincture like a pot of tea.,I crushed the bud to rolling texture.,This allows for it to be completely submerged with less ethanol.,
Using 1oz. of bud I cover it with 5-6oz. of ethanol in a canning jar.,I put this in a small pot of water to act as a double boiler. I bring it up to the point where the ethanol is ready to boil ( 170°f) and remove it from the water and let it steep for 10 minutes. After straining it there's 4-5 oz. of tincture.,I want 4oz. of tincture from 1oz. of bud so I reduce or add to as needed.,This ends up giving me APROX 25mg of thc per squeeze of the dropper. This has worked out well for my needs of the tincture.,Best2all

  15. How do you feel now with the process ?

  16. I think it becomes a matter of how hard do you wanna work for that 20%, a point of diminishing returns kind of thing. I hate waste & thought of eating/cooking the material left from straining my tinctures, but never tried it. let us know. :passing-joint:

  17. I am very happy with the tea method.,The whole process adds 30 minutes to the quick wash if that.,.I strain it through a chezcloth bag and then filter it through a coffee filter.,
My tea making step may be a big waste of time but I am going to keep doing it this way because I have been very happy with the tincture I get doing it like this.,
I can use the tincture under the tongue or in/on food or drink.,making it an edible and increasing its potency.

  18. I started out mixing the by-product 50/50 with good bud for smoking which worked ok.,The only problem is that using the tincture has cut my smoking (the point of it all) back to next2nothing. so now I have a bucket full of labeled bags of different batches of tincture leftovers.,.
So you can smoke it or donate it to a friend to make their stash go further.,

  19. I don't make a good test subject. After 50 years I may have a tolerance issue. My wife otoh is a lt wt. During my "research" I've noted if she does a dose sublingually it is fine, is she swallows the same dose in juice you can see results in her eyes but she claims she "is not high" then 2-3 hrs later is greened out???
