The Year 1 Million

  1. Does it really matter which year it is?

Why do we measure time in the method that we do?

  2. God I hate when people post on this forum when theyre high

  5. Alright guys, since we're here;

let's declare this the last Century.

IT's the TWENTIETH Century by the way,

considering that it started on ZERO.

  6. Oh Epicurus I hate when people refer to deities.

  7. Hello Travis, I like marijuana too :p

To add to the thread, language in itself is already a crude form of communication.
Life is complex, and we try to simplify it..
So, to put things in perspective for eachother we base it like we do.

But technically we're at about the year of 4,54 billion
So 2012 is just the years that passed APPROX. after Jesus died.

In China its not 2012 btw.. they count differently all together.

  8. I thought our measure of time was based on planetary movement around the sun? I know our years started with the birth of Christ, hence B.C. (Before Christ) and A.D. (After Death)

AD = Anno Domini which means 'in the year of our Lord.'

    So, it's not 2012 AD- it's AD 2012.

    ---

People make up time as a social reference point...

For example: We say, 'Do you remember that game back in '07? What an epic battle... '

Without a standard of time we'd say, 'Do you remember that game back in that unspecifiable period of time? What an epic battle... '

    It would just seem weird.

But this does not mean time exists.

  12. We could say "Hey, remember that gameB that came right after gameA came out but before gameC came out?"

We don't do that because that requires more mental work to follow, so we use dates to make it easier.

Dates are similar to how C++ pointers reference memory. Using pointers (dates), a program can store a list of memory location addresses (dates) instead of having to put every value into memory.

Time is just a bunch of universe junk moving around through 3D frames.
