Anyone else thing The Who kinda sold themselves out i feel like they would of never done the superbowl 50 years ago. opinions?
Of course they wouldn't have played the Super Bowl then, as the first one was in 1967. I've been a gigantic Who fan for most of my life, and I don't think they sold out by playing. It's just another concert. Who (no pun intended) really cares if it just happens to be during a football game. The SB halftime show is probably the single biggest non-sport sport related event (hmmm... that was kind of confusing). Anyway, sorry for harping on you a bit there. I can understand where you're coming from. Let's turn this into the official Who appreciation thread.
I used to be a huge Who fan and I guess the halftime show was alright/what everyone expected musically. That light show was fucking stellar tho!! If they used those lazers and floor lights all the time; I'd probably try to catch as many Who shows as possible haha.
they were cool rebellious rock guys at first, they became real gay real quick though. rock opera/arena rock type shit.. just joined the masses of other shitty rock bands that became rich and famous and started sucking.
For a The Who show it was average. For a half-time show it was amazing. But I still think its off not having John Entwistle and Keith Moon there.
Okay, I also agree that this should become a Who appreciation thread, so no more negativity please?
I 100% approve of this post. It's so definitively representative of my opinion that I even stamped it with an extra- and bold-
For me, the Who was the first band I ever truly "listened" to- the band started me out on a path of musical discovery beyond my wildest imagination and ever growing daily. I can never forget the Who for the impact they have had on me, and will always hold them in the highest regard of all my bands.
the Who was amazing on the SB half time how, but like ballparkmanatee said its not the same having them not be there, may they RIP and may Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey rock for the rest of their lives
QFT, the whole time i was watching them perform on sunday i was like wtf, they kinda suck without Keith Moon.
Hah. Well I think the drummer was competent. Like he didn't detract for the show or anything. But during the drum solo on Won't Get Fooled Again I couldn't help but think how awesome it would have been to have Keith up there banging away on his drums like the madman he was. RIP.
Competent? The drummer is the son of Ringo Starr, Richard Starkey. He was trained by Keith Moon his entire life. I mean, no one is Keith, but give the kid some more credit than "competent"
Anybody thats adequate enough to play live with The Who during an event as huge as a Super Bowl half-time show is way beyond advanced. Competent probably was not the best choice of words but still I think I gave credit where credit is due
They should have shown video footage of The Who at Woodstock or the Isle of Wight or Leeds festivals in 1970. The SB performance was Pete and Roger, not The Who. In my opinion, the most distinct part of The Who's sound was the rhythm section. Neither of those guys is around anymore.
did anyone see the interview and performance on the nfl network a few days before the sb? it was awful and they kept saying how they don't really care for american football! th actual half time show was better but that really turned me off. i really like alot of there older stuff and from what ive seen there performances used to be fucking amazing but wtf
