The State of Music

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by SmerfHerder, Nov 21, 2010.

  1. Alright I know its not exactly an original thought to say that popular music today sucks mad dick..but i find it really ridiculous that this song was made just to support the backstory of a movie (Get Him to the Greek...so funny:D)

and this song was made, for people to listen to, as real music:

It's depressing, and someday a group of great fucking musicians (probably creatively inspired stoners) will band together, say fuck this shit, and revive music so that it may achieve the glory it knew from the 1960's-1999. You heard it hear folks, the prophecy has been foretold.

  2. Good music in the mainstream died with Shannon Hoon and Kurt Cobain. You have to do a lot of real digging but there is still great music out there man.

But yeah I keep thinking where is our generation's Beatles, Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin? Its really sad (especially to a guitarist and blues fan such as myself) that hip hop and digitally generated 'music' has entirely invaded and subverted real music.

  5. Yea, and how about all the massproduced, autotuned, ghost written "Rap music" that comes out today. In my opinion real hip hop can not be found anywhere in mainstream music. Of course, the Lil Wayne dickriders would say otherwise

  6. lol just listen to what you like. why have i seen this topic so many damn times? nobody gives a shit so listen to your music. yeah tik tok is bad but does it really hurt you so much that you gotta make a thread about it?

    I'll answer that one: Yes.

It wouldn't matter if it was just Ke$ha. It wouldn't matter if it was just her, Gaga, Perry, Bieber, Spears, Aguilera, Pink, Wayne, Drake, even Kid Cudi (sorry folks, him too). It's only a few right there. Some are givens, some are contested hot topics. But the gist is it's not just Kesha dont get it mixed up. There isn't enough time in the day or bandwidth probably, either, to post examples of all the garbage that is dominating the ears of 85% of the country, give or take 10%.

I do think there is some hope for music fans in ... Europe... Japan... but we get shat on.

When looking for good music, don't just go old/classic. There is a lot of underground rock, prog, hiphop, fusion out there today that is ... amazing. It's a hefty task. Don't be afraid to look overseas. A lot of music outside of the US is a) pretty great, still has soul and b) not necessarily not in English either.

Search on. Last.fm is your friend. Dig deeper, spiral out, keep going...

Not to say that you're not right about just listen to what you like, but we're on a music discussion forum having a discussion about something that's bugging us about something we love. And all you try to add to the discussion is "Let it be, don't discuss it". Topics like this pop up cuz people don't use the search feature. Or don't want to be on page 3 or 27 or 52, they want their comments on the first page. Preferably, at the top. =D

  8. Fuck mainstream radio. I listen to two things: ESPN radio, and my iPod. Know what I think when I hear mainstream radio? Dumbass, obnoxious, alcoholic, sorority/frat fucks...and/or the show Jersey Shore.

It's all about DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. Especially their live '90's stuff. Rocks my shit every time.

  9. in the age of bootlegging, pirating, and illegal downloading, young and stupid people have become the target demographic of platinum-selling artists

thats why the mainstream sucks now.
because of all the people that listen to good music being too smart to pay for it

  10. Well if it was one thing in particular it probably was just that. Damn, I like how you framed that.

  11. Even if albums were only 2.50 each, I wouldn't have been able to afford all the music I have until after I was an old man. Now add in that albums usually cost something like 6 to 20 dollars and we see why rabid music fans would have to be independently wealthy to get all the music they wanted to hear.

Could go on all day. Thanks
