The Search For Anti-Anxiety Strains MEGA THREAD

Discussion in 'Smoking Accessories Q&A' started by Wolfmoon2682, Feb 22, 2016.

  1. I am currently searching for different strains of marijuana with anti-anxiety properties to not only try myself but to gather information from others. Not just strains that calm or sooth but strains that DON'T cause a panic attack. I want to start a list of them here to discuss with others. This will most likely be a long process as i don't have easy access to quality buds so i will definitely be relying on the community here to chime in! But first a little bit about myself and why i'm doing this.

-MY HISTORY AND WHY I'M HERE: I started smoking way back in 1995 at a young age. From that time, all the way up until i was about 20 years old i never had a single bout of anxiety or panic that i could recall. Then one day seemingly out of nowhere after a hiatus from smoking a friend dropped by. I smoked like i always had, given the fact that i hadn't seen him in a while it was definitely a celebratory toke session. Shortly after we blazed i started to feel a shortness of breath, it was hot as hell as i didn't have any AC and it was JULY. So i bugged out and had to go outside for some air.

Many of you probably know that sensation... like you just ran 2 miles and just CAN NOT catch your breath for the life of you! Then you notice your heartrate and OHHHH SHIT DUDE! It's a fuckin downward spiral from that point on!

Well throughout the years i've fought that feeling off but gradually it became harder and harder for me to find quality bud, i was forced to getting whatever i could and it was one of those situations where consistency be damned! My guy always had random shit. ALWAYS! Most of the time it bugged me out at first but if i eased into it i was okay. I got sick of it about 3 years ago and walked away... for the 3rd time! Trying to chase down a good source of quality nugs, cost, anxiety attacks, i just said to hell with it.

But it always nagged at me. Every day i would have that urge to reach for the pipe, especially after a meal. I never wanted to quit. I saw no reason to until the anxiety started. When it got to the point where i enjoyed it less and less without anxiety i gave it up. I had spoken to others here and on multiple forums and the general consensus was "it's just not for you anymore man"

I don't accept that! Hence why i'm here now. Because i know strains exist that sooth those feelings or completely avoid them in the first place. This is my quest to find those strains and to better understand why anxiety takes hold of so many of us and how we can avoid it!

-MY RESULTS SO FAR: (aka the pathetically small amount of info i have) From what i've found, indicas seem to be a major force in the fight against anxiety (this is a resounding NO SHIT from most of you i'm sure) and i have to say that for the most part i agree. As i stated above, my access to quality bud was extremely limited! I never had the chance to pick which strain i wanted. It was ALWAYS a guessing game for me aside from the few times someone came through town toting about the strain they had.

Northern Lights: The first time i lit this up was around 1996... it was unlike anything i had ever smoked in the year or so i had been smoking. For those of you who never tried it the best way i can explain this oldschool strain is, a cozy fire in a winter cabin with a snowstorm outside. Strange image to paint i know, but nevertheless that's how it made me feel. That warm glow i felt was unmatched. Not too couch locky but definitely not racy at all! Heavy feeling eyes but not sleepy. This was definitely one of the best experiences i ever had with smoking.

Now i've been told (and to my GREAT surprise) that certain sativas can be great for anxiety. I had no idea this was a thing until recently and i CAN NOT confirm this. I've also found out recently that the time of harvest can greatly influence how the buds can make you feel. I had no idea that a late amber harvest had more of a calm high to it. It explains why it's so damn hard to find good anti-anxiety buds! It's simple really... the vast majority of mids out there are rushed, with inexperienced growers. This leads to a FLOOD of immature buds. Exactly the type of shit i've had my hands on most of my life!

I've also heard that CBD makes a difference, i hate to coin this phrase but "back in my day" we only talked about THC. That was it... we had no research to go over. The dark ages of cannabis are starting to lift, and with it more information and scientific study is being done! THIS IS A WONDERFUL TIME for cannabis enthusiasts! Now some of you might claim to have been in the know years back, but the fact remains that most of us were not. It wasn't mainstream information and part of the problem with Cannabis education is just how damn jumpy everyone was and sadly many still remain.

One did not simply talk about these things in great detail outside of their trusted circle of toking pals! We certainly didn't hop online to discuss it, and if we did... those of us who knew the most about it were the most paranoid because we were usually growing the shit! I use "we" lightly because i never grew anything. Though i hope that will change very soon!

I've heard that OG buds or oldschool buds that went around back in the day were mostly relaxed highs, more of a body high. I don't know how true this is, but given the limited experience i've had with supposed "oldschool" strains it seems plausible. Back in those they didn't really have any "power bud" the high THC racy shit that is popular now. This might have very well been the case even in the mid 90's only i didn't know it. It could have something to do with my shift from being chill to being anxious when smoking, i honestly have no idea. But it seems like the tried and true strains of yore are great for anxiety for the most part!

So in closing i will say, there are many things i didn't know, there are many things i still don't know and then there any many things i don't know that i don't know!

Share your information here! Not everyone is the same obviously and what works for me might not work for you! But please compile your results here! Let's make this the best thread for anxiety and panic attack sufferers the cannabis world has ever known!

  2. I have high anxiety and OCD so I was wary as I approached Cannabis treatment.

My experience is with several High CBD strains. Some are local grows and can't be found on Leafly database. Others can such as Harlequin, Cannatonic, and ACDC.
What I like about the three mentioned is that there is a very light or mellow head high. Mostly, it alleviates pain and calms me a bit. Definitely helps with anxiety.
I also like Indicas like Purple Urkle. Great body feeling of relaxation. Also good for pain.

The key is to take it slow no matter what strain you decide to try. Small doses and wait. The dosage can be increased if necessary but you can't take it back once you've done it.
It's really important to build your experience when trying out a new strain. Make sure it is available down time for yourself and check your environment. Maybe play some good music or sit outside and enjoy some nature. Don't put pressure on yourself and I like to remind myself that even if I overdo it and start to experience anxiety that it will end quickly. For me the strongest effects only last a few hours at most. I can handle just about anything for a few hours especially with the knowledge that there is an end in sight.
I vape flower mostly but my experience with smoking it prior was the same. Edibles will work differently, however.

I'm still experimenting with strains and dosage but so far the results have been positive. I'm happy to be almost completely off of pharmaceuticals.

  3. I was thrown a bunch of pills for my anxiety, i managed to ween off all of them but it was the hardest thing i've ever done. I need to experiment a bit more with high CBC strains. I've heard that the honey oil left over after a few vape sessions is very high in CBD as it's extracted through the process of vaping. I'll have to be sure to start collecting it instead of just washing it away.

I wish my state would legalize so i could get easy access to different strains to test them out. It can't be stressed enough how slow someone with anxiety should approach a strain so good point there! I try to ease into it but some times i jump the gun and regret it later.

For me i noticed that once i've settled into a strain, 9/10 times i can start to consume it without any issues at all. But some times i just can't get used to a stain no matter how much of a tolerance i've built up. I suspect that's due to them being both a high sativa strain mixed with an early harvest.

I'm going to be trying some stuff later today that i had a while ago. Not sure what strain it is but i know leafly has an ID system, i'm pretty sure it's dodgy at best but i'm going to try it anyways since i'm not certain what strain it is but it's worked for me in the past.

  4. In my experience controlling anxiety with Cannabis has been that sativas are the most effective. The mental high tends to break the thought loops that cause anxiety and the euphoria from the THC washes away negative feelings.

My favourites are green crack, strawberry cough and haze.

  5. The Harlequin is a good one to try out if you are checking out Sativas. It is uplifting. Anxiety triggers are different and there are many manifestations of anxiety. I really feel like some mental prep and building the experience to be a positive one while taking it slow is the key to success.

  6. I mainly use sativas with excellent anti-anxiety properties but sometimes they make your brain go to strange places. Just recently tried a straight up indica and was pleased with the relaxation thing, I even got a nap!!! That was huge for me. So sativas: Recon, Sativalicious, Blue Champagne, Blue Dream, Pineapple, Strawberry Cough.

  7. In reply to my other post I'd like to say that indicas don't do much for my anxiety. I end up feeling stoned but my anxiety remains just as strong.

  8. CBD crew have just brought out a strain called CBD therapy, I'm in a similar boat after 5 solid years of smoking over a is a week my head started to go loopy so I've stopped until I can set up another grow with this CBD therapy.

Indicas only really freak me out because my breathing becomes really relaxed and i feel a bit of a disconnect from my body due to the HEAVY body buzz most of them have. It can just cause you to feel out of body a lot. But that kind of anxiety sensation i can usually overcome by just taking some deep breaths. Though when i smoke too much of it... it starts to feel like i have to focus to breath. With indicas it's more of a sedated thing, with sativas i've tried it's just pure panic for me.

I'll keep looking but recently i got some really potent Vanilla Kush and it's doing a great job! A bit panicked the first day, especially when i got brave at the end of the day and pulled two massive rips from my hotbox. Keep in mind though this is my first time smoking in 3 years and i also suffer from asthma. But I'm very interested in Strawberry Cough. I've heard great things from many people including this very thread.

It's interesting that Sativas work for some and Indicas work for others. Might have something to do with the cause of the anxiety and how it manifests in the individual.

As other posters have mentioned, strains with high levels of CBD (cannabidiol) would be a good choice, the science speaks for itself

  15. Like someone already said, Leafly is a fantastic source of information about tons of different strains of cannabis, with more in depth information on effects and such. I too suffer from anxiety, on occasion when I smoke I get all panic'd out too. A few weeks ago, me and a couple buddies got some stuff called Purple Diesel, which gave me arguably the best high I've ever experienced. Relaxed my mind a lot, made me really giggly and happy. Girl Scout Cookies is another excellent choice for those with anxiety.

Also, know your limits. Don't smoke too much too fast. Take it slow, relax, smoke a bowl, wait half an hour, if you aren't satisfied, smoke another and repeat. The goal is to enjoy the experience, not to burn up all your ganja in a single night haha

If you have not tried Currant Kush, I recommend you give it a try. It's one of the few strains that truly treats anxiety.

  17. I like to start my day with Juanita LA Lagrimosa. She, my pheno, as been tested at 7.5% the and 11.4% cbd. She has enough thc that, along with that affect of the cbd, she gives a really nice mellow high.

I have tried several other high cbd strains. I find that the ones with equal cbd and thc just dont work as well as those with more cbd than thc. None do it for me like Juanita! She can be gotten from several seedbanks.

Okay so somewhere along the line i got REALLY baked and started thinking my other thread was this one... so now i'm actually going to attempt to post the information iv'e compiled here... where it belongs lol. Don't judge me!

Many of us are aware of the great THC rush that occurred back in the day, and i say back in the day not because it's over, but because people now recognize the benefits of CBD and are actively growing more CBD high strains! But this "THC rush" as i call it, really messed things up for people with anxiety sensitivities to THC.

Because of this practice we have FAR MORE THC heavy buds out there. However there is some confusion about THC and paranoia/anxiety! Mid grade buds cause me just as much, if not MORE anxiety than high quality, high THC buds do! WHY!? Because the ratio is messed up! There is simply not enough CBD to balance the equation!

Okay so why are mids worse? Because mids are often rushed to harvest! leaving them with higher THC ratios! THIS IS CRITICAL for us to understand! High THC marijuana does not (by it'self) cause anxiety/paranoia! The absence of enough CBD is the issue! (also i'm sure other less understood compounds are a factor)

Keep this in mind and remember, if you can't control, or have no way of knowing what your THC to CBD ratio is, do not get large amounts at a time, and definitely take it slow! If you got stuck with some low CBD buds, i suggest a vape. Vape as little as you can at first because the THC will boil off first! CBD takes more heat. This is why ABV weed is perfect for bed time and usually low enough in THC to balance out with the remaining CBD that hasn't been boiled off yet.

Also keep in mind, that when you vape you get more THC than CBD with a lower heat setting! Remember, CBD needs a higher temp to vape! Right now, at this very moment i have a half oz of some really low CBD buds that are making me paranoid af! I take it slow with fresh vape pulls and i go heavy on the ABV stuff once it's had a few pulls. Even combustion on ABV works well for getting a higher CBD intake.

It becomes very easy to see why so many people have had an adverse reaction to marijuana! A high demand for THC, a lack of CBD understanding in the past leaving CBD in the dust! More ease of access to mid quality buds that are rushed to harvest leaving them CBD depleted!

Odds are if you know someone who quit smoking due to anxiety, they only had access to limited types of bud or worse, they always get something different from their "guy"
