The Sacrafice (Home made ceramic bong)

  1. Hi, I'm new here but I figured I'd join so i can get to know the community and post pics of this project I'm working on.

I'm sculpting a ceramic bong in my ceramics class and I want to share my progress as I develop it. I have a few pics and will try to keep posting more as I go along.

Heres a rough drawing I sketched up when I got the idea to make it

This next pic is a cleaner drawing of what the backside and Bowl will look like

This is the base of the bong, at this point I was just trying to get some form out of the clay. I dont have any other pics of it but since this one I have added about 6 inches of height to the walls.

This is the final pic for right now. This is the bowl.

I actually asked my teacher if I could fire it but of course i made up a lame excuse as to what it is. she was uncertain about it but said possibly. My ceramics teacher is the kind of person who, it's obvious that in her teens she smoked but doesnt anymore and she most likely could tell what it is, and for this reason im considering just air drying and coating the outside of it with acrylic paint (not in the actual bowl as smoking acrylic would be a bad idea)

Idk, this is ceramics clay and it is usually fired in a kiln but I am curious, would anyone know if by chance firing it in the oven at a high temp would have any effect? At least make it a little stronger?

  2. Thats awesome dude. yeah maybe an oven or something would be your best bet... or go to a pottery place and borrow theirs

  3. An oven will not get to a high enough temperature to fire it correctly. You probably won't have to fire the bong itself, but just the bowl.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your "lame excuse?"

  4. yeah home oven is not hot enough for ceramics. I know my pottery supply store here could fire our sculptures for us so maybe you can check if any near you offers that service.

  5. Lol i took clay from my ceramics class... we had at least a ton of it in the back room lol

I wade a little hand bowl out of it.. dried it out... Then lit a bonfire in my backyard that i had burning for a good 12 or so hours with my bowl in the center of the firer the hole time... by the time the fire was out it was all cooked up.. nice dark red.

lol, well since I'm an avid incense user even when I'm not smoking I made an excuse that it was a cover for it. Seriously, I have a burner that is basically a little stand for cones or powder incense and a cover for it wouldn't be a bad idea cause it is a fire hazard. Idk if she assumed It was a bowl for smoking purposes or not. All I know is she Hates it when people start making ash trays even. She just seems paranoid about it really.

Yeah, I do know of some places that I could get it fired at but I'm not sure about costs or anything like that and I don't have a job atm. I'll see what I can do later.

Also I forgot to mention that the bong itself won't be am obvious one. Right now I'm calling it a "vase" so that way I can get away with it. If she tries to tell me having a hole in the mouth of the skull I plan one sculpting into the base makes it look like a bong then I'll deny it until she gains my trust which is simple since I'm one of her favorite students thanks to my artistic skill, and experience with all kinds of medias.

  7. Like i read all that.... (I'm high) and all i understood was like...... "She'll trust me................THEN WILL I PLOT MY EVIL SCHEME!"

Yeah, idk I guess I had alot to say and forgot this is grasscity :p

Also just drew this up a minute ago. I'd say this is my final concept for the frontside. Gives me a better idea of how I'm going to make the bowl fit to.
