The Roman Empire question

  1. Apparently there is a new(?) trend going around and it seems that women are mostly surprised by it. Ask any male how often they think of the Roman Empire. The answers range from multiple times daily, to several times a week. Personally I'd have to say at least once a day something will cause me to think about some aspect of it. Women seem shocked by this and can't fathom why anyone would think of the Roman Empire even occasionally. Let alone be a recurring subject of thought. I was going to post a video link to youtube but there are too many to choose from, all with different answers but all with surprised and confused women. Should I do a poll to find out what GC thinks?

  2. Yeah, I don't get it. Why would men randomly think of the Roman Empire? And what does it say about those of us who never think of it without some kind of prompt?

  3. About daily the past few weeks, but there was a new Diogonese documentary (he's my fave) on youtube, so there's lots of old roman figures in my algorithm lately.

    The documentary:
Everyone should be more like Diogenes

Plus I'm a carpenter, not exactly a stone mason but I have to build columns and even fluted columns from time to time. I do concrete occasionally too, so I'm usually a thought or two away from the roman empire at any given moment at work.

Plus, ya know, the fall of rome 2.0 happening right before our eyes, it's kinda weird to me they don't think about it.

  4. I never think of the Roman empire. Why would I?

  5. I don't know why other people do, but for me I'm sorta like Papageorgio. Hard to look at what's happening in the US and not see all the comparisons to the fall of the Roman Empire. And almost every single day the thought goes through my mind that the Romans had concrete that lasts thousands of years but the city where I live gets maybe 2-3 good years before a newly paved street turns to shit. Also been dealing with a few plumbing issues and the Romans had that shit figured out long ago. And a ton of other reasons that just pop into my head when I get high.

  7. Here I am ripping out a tile shower. Is the tile on a tile backer board? NO! They used wire mesh and concrete! Maybe not concrete concrete but it's a masonry product for sure. And it's a worst case scenario as far as tile demo goes.

Damn you ancient romans!!!!! *shakes fist*

  9. Didn't Nero castrate Sporus and then marry him? That sounds pretty gay to me. ;)

  10. A personal pet peeve of mine is hearing the word decimated. It quite literally meant that the survivors of a losing battle would have a further tenth of the survivors or 10% killed as a punishment. Now it can refer to almost anything. That boxer or that football team got decimated. Or even "wow I got decimated last night".
