The Project (1st time grow)

  1. So I'm starting out with 4 seeds in this giant pot, only one will be kept once we determine sexes. I have a couple questions. First, from germinating the seeds in soil (mixture of peat moss and perlite), should I constantly be keeping them moist over the next 3 days? I don't want to overwater them so what's a good way method to check? Also I heard warm water is more effective is that true? I'm using a box fan for circulation but would it be better to put some holes into the box? It seems the lights are putting a lot of heat off, I'll check it with a thermometer tomorrow.

P.S. I was looking for the NPK ratio on the soil, it's Organic Valley Top Soil as you can see from the picture. The PH should be 6.5.

  2. You keep the soil moist till they germ(put plastic wrap over the pot to keep the soil moist), once they have germed they dont need water until the top 1-2ins of soil are dry. (this is covered in about every grow guide, do some more reading.)

Warm water helps, but not hot. As long as the soil is warm (shoud be if the lights are that hot) and the waters not cold you should be fine. The warmth speeds up the germination process.

I would keep a fan blowing on the plants, and also put a hole in the room for an exhuast fan.

  3. just something i do. i have a water filter thingy like britta water filter. i fill it up and keep it in the grow room. when i water my plants the water is a good temp. when im out of water i just fill it up and put it back in the grow room. no prob with cold water

  4. Make sure your soil isn't pressed down to much, the roots need room to breath and roam freely. Im sayin this because it looks like you just pushed the soil down and crammed it all in haha :) but top soil can be pretty heavy and make a big difference, I picked up a bag of top soil realized I need some other soil picked up a pro-mix soil bag and the weight difference was unbeleivable(same sized bag). So you might want to check that out and also Tin foil is no good, your better off with ur plain walls because it will just create problems later on in life.

  5. BIG mistake ur making. that pot is too big and you should get those seeds/plants out as soon as you can. you need to start out in smaller pots.

  6. Yup, suprised someone didnt mention this sooner.

  7. Yikes! I didn't even read that the seedling was in there already.. Yep, your probably gana have to start over.

  8. Whaa? Yeah there are 4 down in there! I have to admit this was mainly my friend's idea so I'm not sure what his intentions are. By the way what's wrong with all the aluminum foil? I think this thread should be moved to absolute beginners also, given that I'm an absolute beginner.

  9. hey, it's not a good idea to use tin/aluminum foil is because it can create hot spots. i love astro-foil. easy to hang and clean. pretty much lasts forever too. it's a little pricey but you only have to buy it once.

  10. First let me say I really appreciate any input. Second I want to express that I knew my methods would be unorthodox if not bad, so please reserve from telling me to start over as I will not. With that said here are the now 11 day old sprouts:

  11. so you want input so you can ignore it?? well, i don't think it's a good idea........adios

  12. First off, you need to transplant those seedlings into seperate pots. If you don't their roots will tangle and your plants will stunt. At this stage I'd go for a 1gal pot per plant.

  13. Transplant asap. VERY BAD IDEA having 4 growing in one plant. A single plant would love to have that pot all to itself when mature. Save that pot for later and go by 4 smaller ones for like a buck a piece. Im sure you can sacrifice 4 dollars.
