I am a high school senior now, and I must say life so far has been pretty crazy. I've lived at the poverty line in America nearly my whole life as an immigrant from the Netherlands, and it truly has been an experience. Although there are many things I dislike about America, I cannot argue with the opportunity it has given me. Today I got accepted to James Madison University, with only 3,960 out of 22,400 applicants were accepted. To me it is truly magical that anybody, no matter what their background, has the opportunity to succeed in this country. I know this is a rather uninteresting post, but I just want to tell everyone what an important day today is to me. All the hard work through school, and struggling in my personal life has finally paid off. I have a successful future in sight and I cannot be more thankful. Peace blades! It's been a good 18 years! Edit: Well I got my financial aid summary in the mail today. I'm set for about 16,000 in grants. Whatever money is left from that after tuition and fees gets directly deposited into my bank account every week as living expenses! I'm going for free! America is awesome.
What about your tuition? You mentioned living at the poverty line....you have a scholership? Anyways, congratulations man. I hope you really do succeed in life and get to do the things you always wanted. Cheers!
Well I'm already confirmed for a 5,500 a year Federal Pell Grant thanks to my single mother's low income. I'm applying for 20 or 30 scholarships as well. Hopefully I will have it fully paid off. Luckily my dad has $4000 saved up for books and a laptop also. Thanks though man, I'm so proud of myself right now.
Good luck. Shit's hard. I was born here and I'm still trudging through school trying to survive. This country's going down the shitter...
Glad to hear it's working out for someone! Not me, but still, congratulations, enjoy it while you can.
Congratulations on your acceptance. I like to think, immigrants work alot harder to achieve their goals than a domestic person who was born here. I know that statement is not entirely true but for the most part, it is. Okay, enough talk. Celebration time!
Good luck man, I know some people who, due to their financial situation, were able to get so many scholarships that they are actually being paid to be in school. Keep up the hard work through college man.
If you don't get those scholarships and your parents are making money to be at the poverty line(or if they were rich, you can still get loans) then you can get federal aid loans, if your parents aren't that well off, you can probably get full subsidised loans that can put you through school with no problems, you'll have to pay them back after but thats all worth it if you have your mind set on succeeding.
im tellin you man, college is the bee's knees. dont fuck up your lucky streak by growing/smoking/cooking in the dorms though. im sure you have read all the dorm horror stories. id hate to see you contribute.
Thanks guys, I've just been lucky to enjoy learning. I'm damn lazy, so my grades aren't perfect, but I have an unweighted 3.5 GPA thanks to my intrest in learning things. I'm not planning to go to JMU, actually I'm already committed to Virginia Commonwealth University. And one of the sweetest things is that you don't have to live on campus Freshman year. So yeah, no worries about smoking/growing in dorms or anything. VCU's dorms suck ass in general.
I dont want to sound like an asshole and ruin your moment but James Madison university is not a very hard school to get into
Good job man. Seriously, that's pretty sweet. I'm still trying to fix the mistakes I made back in highschool so I can go to college. What are you thinking about majoring in?
