The Future of YouTube

  1. For those of you that have known YouTube from the start, you will know they first started out with almost no sponsors and absolutely no advertisements.

As they got bigger they went to advertising on the site to help pay for it growing. But then, they decided to put ads in videos. It wasn't commercials at first, just those pop-up things you can click on. Not a big deal.

Then they started to put commercials/ads on videos with millions of views, which started to get annoying. But they didn't put the ads on other videos with less views, so it wasn't a big deal.

But now-a-days I notice that almost every video has an ad/commercial in front of it. It could be a video with 1,000 views and there will be a 30 second ad for "Romney for America" or "Obamacare" or some bullshit. Or you will try to watch a 1 minute video, only to have to watch a 30second ad first, thats half the video you planned to watch!

What happened to free access to videos? It seems like we can't escape it no matter what we do now.

Am I the only one that thinks its getting a little crazy?

  2. I, like every other internet user hate advertisements, but in order to combat piracy they must put in advertisements so artists can have some compensation, if this combats laws on the internet being placed and us being tracked, i'm all for it.

And by the way, it's not youtube that decides to place an ad on a video, the video creator themselves decide they want an ad on the video, and they get payed for every time someone clicks on it, or watches the full ad.

  3. Yeah I knew that part, about them getting paid. Which I guess would make sense to why so many videos have ads. I just hope they aren't being randomly inserted into videos, its what it seemed like. lol

  4. Nope, I've made some videos of gaming etc. on youtube, I can choose to "Monetize" my video (AKA put an advertisement), If I do not, no ad will ever show up on the video, but I will not gain any monetary gain.
