The Fall of Rap

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by Al XE the Bud, Oct 16, 2013.

  1. OP says rap went from "philosophers to poets to pimps and gangsters

Beyond how idiotic that statement is
lets take a look at some "philosophers" from the old days

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG405y51cVk
Song is about bitches, alcohol, drugs and materialistic items. Such philosophic statements

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41qC3w3UUkU
Diss song on biggie, about murdering him and his crew

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUawT_tl7sg
Song about murdering everything that breaths.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MrQtOoQRpc
    Song about crime

my brain is swelling from all of these philosophical 90's rap.

All themes found in 80's and 90's rap can be found in todays rap. No exceptions. Mainstream or underground.

    Emotional
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZOy6t1vVtE

    Crime ridden
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=histRy-jy64

Reflectional song about material things and what they mean to someone who came from nothing
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra06U_Dio9s

Completely ignorant version of the above theme
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF-hq_CHNH0

So like im sayin, OP thread is pointless. His narrow view of hip hop as a whole is inhibiting his ability to form any logical statements about rap.

  2. There's a difference between rap and Hip Hop & if you don't think so [insert KRS-One quote].

Okay, my bad. But I kind of conceded the point a few posts ago. But you were busy digging up all them youtube vids, huh :D
Thing is, the good stuff doesn't reach me, and I don't have your shiny PhD on rap :p

Btw, rap is a derivative of hip hop, just like funk is a derivative of reggae. Saying rap is hip hop is like saying funk is reggae.

    Edited coz ninja'd.

You dont need to teach me what hip hop is.

Hip hop is a culture, rap is the music that comes from that culture.

So what I was saying is, your inability to understand the hiphop culture dstops you from making a sensical statement about the intricacies of the rap genre.

Well okay man. You were correct. I was way off. That do it for you, I hope.
Btw, why all that rage? Am I not entitled to an opinion? Or are you just completely unable to be civil?

  19. The digital age brought more music of all kinds.  Anyone can get their music out there now.  It's good because there's more variety, but bad because you've got to dig through more music to find what you really like.

Idk man, I've been looking at the game for awhile and yes it has declined, but I think it's coming back up.I'm a firm believer that kendrick is saving the game. He's essentially proved you can be mainstream and still be a sick rapper. And besides, your not seeing the game as a whole. There are so many beastly rappers out, some mainstream and others borderline.Flatbush Zombies, Vince Staples, Logic, Joey Badass, Ab-Soul, all of Slaughterhouse, even OF has dope Earl and Domo.Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum
