Just a quick question: On my plants there are big fan leaves. At the crotch of where the these leaves meet the stem are the buds. The buds are about 3 weeks along and are starting to look pretty good. My question is are the big leaves taking nutreients away from the buds and should i remove them? I took them off of one branch just at the flowers to see if it makes a difference but wanted to ask advice as I want to keep everyone at the same timing. Thanks in advance for the help.... Tele
the big leaves need energy and water, removing them will help the plant concentrate its growing on the flowers, plus it will help with light penetration, just dont remove too many at once,it might shock the plant.
If I remember correctly, the fan leaves are what absorbs the energy that that plant needs to build the buds in the first place. Buds don't absorb light so exposing them to more light isn't going to make them grow. Photosynthesis happen in the leaves

let them fall off on their own. Over time, they will yellow and fall as the plant gets farther in the flowering cycle as they won't need as much energy. By them shedding their own leaves, this indicates they are no longer needed therefore prematurely removing them would decrease the amount of energy absorbed thus decreasing energy for bigger buds
the only reason to remove fan leaves is if they are obstructing lower buds. Try other things first before removing them. You can tuck leaves back behind new growth shoots. Those growth sites will keep stretching towards the light and your fan leaves will return to their normal position. You can also cut the blades of the leaf in half, which will leave some of the leaf intact. Try to make total removal a last resort. your plant needs those leaves to absorb light, and you risk stunting your plants growth and bud production if too many are removed.
dont remove ANY till your plants are flowering. all leaves create plant energy, not just the fan leaves, buds also make energy, there is 2 types of photosynthesis, type a and type b,type a is the leaves, type b is bud calyx.later in flowering the big leaves will die off because the plant will not give the big leaves what they need ,it will get stingy and direct all its energy to the flowers so the fan leaves will die off anyway. The plants whole purpose in life is to get pollinated and make seeds, not buds, but not having any males around makes the buds swell as big as the plant can make them on the hopes that it will be pollinated.all your doing is helping it along its normal cycle, with the added benefit of more light penetration, wich will benefit you as well becouse you will have more to smoke in the end.
buds do absorb light, take a budding plant and strip every fan leave off of it,it will still continue to grow buds and wont die.removing the bigger leaves early in flowering actually allows for more energy production becouse of better light penetration.
Got it Thanks guys. I'll let them fall off naturally. I'd post some pix but the digi cam is in disrepair... Tele
