http://paranormal.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://moebius.psy.ed.ac.uk/~paul/zener.html Nice little test for precognition. Post your high scores and let other GC'ers know how you've done. MelT
A bit ripped, but 9's my best out of two. Pure fluke, but there's aline of hits at one point. Results Well, Geist, you got 9 / 25 correct (36%) By chance we would expect 5 / 25 correct guesses (20%) For 25 trials, a score of 9 or above would be statistically significant Breakdown of results <TABLE border=5><TBODY><TR><TD>Trial <TD>Guess <TD>Actual <TD><TD><TD>Trial <TD>Guess <TD>Actual <TD><TD><TD>Trial <TD>Guess <TD>Actual <TD><TD><TD>Trial <TD>Guess <TD>Actual <TD><TD><TD>Trial <TD>Guess <TD>Actual <TR><TD>1 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>6 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>11 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>16 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>21 <TD> <TD> <TD> </TD><TR><TD>2 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>7 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>12 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>17 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>22 <TD> <TD> <TD> </TD><TR><TD>3 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>8 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>13 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>18 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>23 <TD> <TD> <TD> </TD><TR><TD>4 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>9 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>14 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>19 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>24 <TD> <TD> <TD> </TD><TR><TD>5 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>10 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>15 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>20 <TD> <TD> <TD> <TD width=50><TD>25 <TD> <TD> <TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Ummm, even if you got all 25 correct it would not indicate any kind of ESP. AFAIK the notion of ESP is reading someone elses mind or thoughts. Guessing games on the net requires only one brain, yours. Unless ofcourse, "sensing" randomization routines in a far-away computer server also counts as ESP. Personally I'd call it hacking
Quite right! Due to severe lack of a working mind on posting I called 'precognition' ESP/telelpathy. Tests for precognition using Random Number (or sybol) generators like this are common nowadays. Although computer RN generators always show a little bias, they're good enough to use for basic testing. But to me, somebody would need to get a reasonably consistent good score for it to mean anything. Say around 11 for maybe five tests in a row. MelT
I conducted the exact same expiriment in a high school science fair. This isnt the proper way to administer it as a computer presumably isnt capable of sending extra sensory signals. In order to be done right they must choose which card in front of the examiner who knows which symbol is correct. Ill post the results of my expiriments when i can find them.
What you're talking about above is telepathy. This is precognition (the ability to sense future events, not another's mind), which doesn't need the presence of an 'agent' to transmit the symbols. The subject tries to imagine say, reading the correct results at the end of the test. MelT
twould be interesting to see the results from a comparison between the two, cumpters and examiners with the cards. there is much that isnt conveyed with overly simplistic marking such as is with correct/incorrect. for example, MelT's results above show a large % where a star was selected when the answer was square, and same with + and O.
mmyes quite, but i suppose it could be used to test esp as well. I cant get the actual graphs i made on here but i can list some of the notable trials. Out of 25 the highest scores recorded scores were 9s which 4 people scored. Of those 4 people 3 believed in ESP and 1 did not believe in ESP. Also 3 of the 4 who scored 9 were female. Also interestingly, no one who stated that they believed in ESP scored less than 5 out of 25, which would be the probability. However several people who stated they disbelieved in ESP or were undecided scored 3s and 4s. So that didnt really end up proving or disproving one way or another, it basically only told me no one in my highschool is telepathic.
I did some trials over here and got the same kind of results. I've always found it interesting that there should be a disparity between believers and non-believers, and a slight leaning towards women being more successful than men. Although there have been tests that have shown a slight leaning towards a higher than normal score overall, the figures have not really proven anything. I've done the online test here a few times now and done three nines, but I don't think it's significant. But just another thought, and one that currently has those in and out of paranormal research thinking a lot. In many tests held, subjects showed a higher hit rate around 1 in the afternoon. Again this increase is marginal, but it's there. If telepathy/precognition and all the rest of it is not real, then why should there be a change in scores around a fixed time? I'm not saying it proves anything, but it's an intriguing result. MelT
