tap water

  1. i know you are supposed to set tap water out overnight can i fill gallon jugs with the cap off and it will work or does it need to be in buckets?

  2. For off gassing Chlorine you want a large surface area if I recall. Buckets would be my choice but there really is no need. I've used it straight from the garden hose for 40 years. Chlorine is neutralized before it penetrates far enough to harm biologicals in the soil if I remember.

  3. No need to let tap water sit.........I've been using straight tap water for decades without issue.
    Bro-science.

  6. I've been hauling RO water from an ice machine 1.25$/6gal x3 barrels, 150 lbs app twice a week. a good exercise, but not needed? I have hard water Ph 7.8 & >

  7. r/o is not great IMO but hard is worse

  8. Options? My well h2o (for sprinklers only) is worse. I do adjust the Ph though.

  9. If U R gonna buy water from a supermarket, wouldn't distilled water be better?

  10. If your tap is not drinkable, R/O is the best alternative.........not distilled.

  11. NO! Distilled water is not good for plants.

  12. @waktoo I see you disagree. Show me evidence that states distilled water is beneficial for plants or for any other living thing.

  13. You first. Demonstrate that it's not. With peer reviewed science.

  14. It's been proven that distilled water leaches minerals. This has been known for over a hundred years. It's usually the one going against popular opinion that bears the burden of proof. Your move

  15. Let me ask you a question....

Have you, personally, ever experienced detrimental effect caused by the use of RO water in your garden?

  16. I know this wasn't directed to me, but I believe @sweedright is referring to distilled water........not RO.

  17. Absolutely. When I was using RO, I had to add way more calmag. My plants do far better with tap water. Only need a little calmag during stretch now.

  18. It's essentially the same thing, Mick. Water with dissolved ions removed. Just a different process.

  19. How is the use of soluble nutrient fertilizers relevant to the "leaching" you've ascribed to RO water?

"Leaching" is a term used in agricultural soil science that describes nutrient ions being carried through/out of the root zone by water percolating through the soil strata.

It's called "flushing" on weed boards.

Unless you're watering your potted media to a point of significant drainage, RO/distilled irrigation water isn't "leaching" any dissolved minerals from your container media.
