HEy everyone im just wondering how many people on grasscity actually have survival skills that would help them in the wild. Im talking more about making fire, stone knifes, traps, snares, navigating by the stars, etc. I feel that more people should at least have a general idea of what to do rather than just rely on modern technology. Talk about your experience and if you would like a link to get you started just ask. p.s. im not one of those 2012 fanatiscs, i just like to learn new survival skills.
i go backpacking or hiking every weekend. I grew up doing this stuff so it comes sort of naturally but I do have a book that has some great stuff in it. SAS outdoor survival guide. Its based on the british special forces training and literally could save your life even if you didnt know anything.
Yeah it's kind of surprising to me that people don't learn the necessities. All you really need to know for basic survival is how to stay warm, get food, and get water. So firebow, flint, figure-4 deadfall trap, and some gravel filtering maybe. I think most people underestimate how easy it would be for our civilaztion to collapse. All it would take is 1 nuke or emp in NY city, or Washington. We don't use money anymore, we just use a digital representation of money, and the EMP alone would destroy all records of credit cards, debt, money in banks, etc. (think Fight Club or Live Free Or Die Hard) A lot of people would revert to the stone age. That's why everyone should have a gun, ammo, and a bug out location to go to.
I go on a He-Man mountain hike annually with 2 other guys. Last year, we hit the Bighorn Mts in Wyoming. 1st thing we do after hiking in about 5 miles is make a base camp with our own shelters to sleep in. We go on day hikes to fish different lakes for the next few days, probably hiking a total of 10 miles each day. We bring in very little food and our main menu is: fish, squirrel (taken with slingshot), wild onions, chiming bells, wild strawberries, indian paintbrush. I bring my iolite vaporizer with and use it when I go to take a crap. The other 2 guys aren't enjoying the marijuana!! 1 is in law enforcement and the other is a high school teacher. I think we're going to the Gallatin mountains near Bozeman this summer. Peace
I'm going to be staying with a friend in Bozeman this summer at some point. We're going to be camping and fishing, and smoking a lot of weed. When will you be up?
We usually go on our trips in July. I know the teacher would enjoy some of my fine super silver haze if we didn't have the law enforcement dude with us. I'm going to buy a L.E.A.P. (law enforcement against prohibition) t-shirt and wear it on the trip, see what the law man says about it. I'll let you know when we get a tentative date set for the trip. Wouldn't mind getting to know some like-minded people. Where I live, people are very conservative (socially speaking). Gotta stay on the down-low with my illegal activities.
Thanks for the PaleoPlanet link, I'll have a new site to be visiting. I'm quite interested in primitive technology, not only for the aspect of great to know for survival skills, but the crafts are also beautiful and something I'd be interested in learning how to make/do.
"Gotta take another dump, Buddy? Watch out, I think I smelled a skunk earlier." lol...Minimalist camping is the best.
I'm so glad I found this thread! haha. I've always been interested in survival living/ minimalist camping and hiking. It wasn't until recently that I've had the oppurtunity to really start in on this hobby though. I got a nice 82 liter pack for muh Berfday and once my tax returns come in I'm getting a warm weather sleeping bag and a hatchet. then it's off to the woods every weekend to prepare for my graduation trip. I'll be graduating College fall '11 and I plan to enter the peace corps, which is a year of application time. So I plan to spend 6 months of that on the road hiking as many National Parks as I can. My current skills list contains: Building basic shelters (lean-tos and such), starting fires with a flint(I carry a bic lighter and when it runs out of fluid I use its flint to spark moss), some basic trap building, hunting (gun and bow), fishing and fashioning make shift fishing poles...You know the basics. I plan to build on these skills and save up money until my trip.
