Suplimentry Halogen lights?

  1. I have flouros for my set up for the cheap price, but I read in this article (http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/2159.html) that UV rays stimulate THC growth.

I have a desk lamp with a halogen light, I know halogens should not be used for growing as your primary source, but there is a glass plate over the light that is a UV filter, which leads me to believe that halogen's give off a great amount of UV rays if the lamp company thought they needed to protect people merely using a desk lamp. Its not like your living under this stuff.

So does anyone think that maybe we should start adding a halogen light to our setup for the UV rays? Any chance that halogen lights could actually hurt the plant? I know it gives off quite a bit of heat, but if you have a fan the UV rays might be worth it.

I'm only growing one of my plants inside so I can't really afford any experimentation, at least not without some experienced opinions here.

  3. First of all...... WHOOOO 100 posts! lol sorry i just had to say that

    Back on topic...

I think the reason no ones answering you is because not many people have tried this (again.... i think). I have also heard that UV rays help THC development, but I'm not sure if thats true. I don't think having a halogen light on your plant could hurt it, as long as it doesn't get the plant to hot. If you really want to try this, I'd suggest doing a bit more research on halogen lights, then putting the light fairly far away from the plant and see what happens. If its all good, put it a bit closer.

  4. i heard UV black lights work also and i dont think they give off much heat but you would probably need quite a few for it to make a noticable difference

  5. Interesting article about UV light.

Without disputing the merits of the article, what has me tripped up is your conclusion that the halogen is throwing off UV. Your whole point seems premised on a belief that the halogens will throw off UV light, and from what I read in your thread the reason you think that is the glass plate on the halogen light that you say is a UV filter. Are you sure? I would want more to go on than that.

  6. The reason why I'm pretty sure its a UV filter is because the words "UV Filter" are printed on it.

  7. From what I've read, halogens do emit UV but at relatively low levels. The glass shield is there mostly to protect from broken glass if the bulb shatters from the extreme heat halogens give off, and since they are putting in a glass shield anyway they go ahead and make it a UV filter. Halogens convert over 90% of their energy consumption to heat rather than light, so I would be skeptical that halogen can help a grow.
