Super Noob Questions

  1. Hey guys!

I've been lurking around the forums for a day or so and am impressed with the information you guys have compiled :)

I'm basically just starting out learning to grow and need resources. I have seeds I got from a friend as a present and would like to not mess them up on a botched first attempt. If there are places to get "starter" seeds (I've noticed a few links in the forums) that I could start with those, no prob.

I know I need a few pots, 3 - 5 gallons, one plant per pot etc. I live in a decent size apartment, but not huge and not with its own room to dedicate to growing.

I guess what I'm asking is what the best way for me to go about growing. I would prefer something simple, the ideal being to just put the seeds in a pot in the sun and water them a few times a day, but realistically I know I should probably have a setup with lights and a timer.

If someone could point me to a first-timer detailed how-to, or any resources about growing with sunlight (Indoors? Is that possible?).

Anyway, I know you guys get newbs like me everyday, but I appreciate any help that can be given.

is your roof made of glass?

  3. You will need a light indoors, unless you have a greenhouse. You can't just put the plant in the window, it'll only get a couple hours of direct light a day and will wind up resembling something like Charlie Brown's christmas tree. Set up a cabinet or a closet, and take the smell into consideration since you're in an apartment. Either be able to vent it outside safely or do a home made carbon filter. If you want any kind of results indoors, you do need to put forth a little effort. But I found once I got into it, the work became fun.

  4. No my roof is not glass, I see your point :p

I figured I'd need some sort of setup indoors. I guess what I'm unsure of are the supplies needed to start.

I figure I need a cabinet I can light proof, add some lights to it, it needs to be able to vent, etc.

Is three to five plants too much for just personal use? Should I grow less until I feel more comfortable with the process? How tall do I need the cabinet? How large the initial pots? I would prefer not to have to transplant them later, though I've been reading good things about peat cups. Where's the best place to pick up some sort of exhaust fan? Home depot also?

I would really like to try this as a new hobby, I've done some gardening before, but nothing indoors, and nothing that required me to build any special enclosure. Just a little nervous about starting, but I think I'll pick up some supplies and give it a go, post some pics here for advice and see what happens.

Always exciting starting something new :)

  5. There are loads of threads about lighting and growing areas. Use the Search facility to find all you want..

  6. Always!! Especially growing for personal... It puts a lot of meaning to the "teach a man to fish..." saying lol...

    SUPPLY LIST:

    - Lights: Search HID grow lights, CFL...
    Remember* MH(Metal Halide) = veg life / HPS(high pressure sodium)= Flower time!
www.insidesun.com <- they have cheap econo lights... can't find'em cheaper from any other supplier.

    - Soil/hydro?? Depending on which one you choose...
If soil, search for making the best mix, and if hydro... well your on a really good start.

    - Nutes ? sEaRcH fOX farm, Biobizz... Good stuff...

    - As for the vent... Do some more search but basically... your goin to need an exhaust fan and one that brings IN fresh air... try http://www.mdhydro.com/squirrel-cage-fans.html...

I would consider this a good starter kit.

I think the best thing a new grower can do is honestly "know" the plant. Read up on different growing styles and technique, Mj plant life cycle and how their environment affects the (In turn, finding the best suitable conditions indoor for your harvest be blessed by the gods themselves LMAO!.... Really dig deep into your hobby, that's when you reap the best harvests!!

  7. Thanks, OG, that helped a lot :)

I as thinking of soil because it seemed easier, but the more I read hydro seems to yield a better crop and can be cycled faster, so I'll do some more reading on that.

Is hydro notable more difficult then soil, or just different?

  8. I would honestly say upkeep is MUCH easier becuase VS. checking PH of each plant individually... Adding Nutes individually... watering individually..., Hydro, you do it all in you resevoir...

Its more expensive, thats all... but the benefits outway the expense... In one harvest get me? :smoking:
