Study: Smart People Drink, Smoke, Use Drugs
    OpposingViews / Ronald Bailey / 12,20,2010

Researchers find in a new study published in the Review of General
that people with higher IQs are more likely to try out and enjoy mind-altering sutbstances than their dimmer compatriots. As the abstract reports:
Why do some individuals choose to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and use illegal drugs while others do not? The origin of individual preferences and values is one of the remaining theoretical questions in social and The Savanna-IQ Interaction Hypothesis suggests that more intelligent individuals may be more likely to acquire and espouse evolutionarily novel values than less intelligent individuals. Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs is evolutionarily novel, so the Savanna-IQ Interaction Hypothesis would predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to consume these substances.

Analyses of two large, nationally representative, and prospectively longitudinal data from the United Kingdom and the United States partly support the prediction. More intelligent children, both in the United Kingdom and the United States, are more likely to grow up to consume more alcohol. More intelligent American children are more likely to grow up to consume more tobacco, while more intelligent British children are more likely to grow up to consume more illegal drugs.

Based on data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Psychology Today also reported:
The following graph shows the association between childhood intelligence, measured in junior high and high, and adult alcohol consumption seven years later in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent (Add Health) data in the United States. The association is clear and nearly monotonic. The more intelligent Americans are in their childhood, the more alcohol they consume as young adults.

It is important to note that both income andeducation, as well as childhood social class and parents' education, are controlled in multiple regression analyses of these data from the US and the UK. It means that it is not because more intelligent people occupy higher-paying, more important jobs that require them to socialize and drink with their business associates that they drink more alcohol. It appears to be their intelligence itself, rather than correlates of intelligence, that inclines them to drink more.

I suspect most of the city already knew this. :smoke:
  2. I don't believe it. There are way too many stupid people that choose to use drugs as well...
  3. True, there are plenty of dope heads. But a large majority of people with "average" IQ's or less then average IQ's choose not to use drugs. I would blame that on their willingness to believe everything they see or read propaganda. Instead of, like a person with a higher IQ, finding the facts and making connections for themselves.

I dunno that I really buy into the study myself. But maybe.
  4. well they didnt really say it was concrete. but i would believe it. it always seemed the people people who drink the most and consumed the most drugs were the ones getting high grades and scoring high in tests. shit the last two valedictorians at my high school were heavily into drugs.
  5. I knew two retarded girls, who were twins, from high school that both drank excessively and also later started smoking weed. One of them got pregnant and continued to smoke weed and drink alcohol.

  6. And Marsbergen is the father! DUN DUN DUN
  7. I know a lot of people who drink and they're dumb as a pile of rocks.
  8. ok the drinking part is extremly inflated because of the fact that once you hit college alcoholic doesn't apply to you =p lol

  9. I agree. I think this can sometimes be the case.

Personally I believe that dull people do not contemplate anything anywhere near as much as intelligent people. Extremely dull people may never question the universe and the meaning of life because they cannot get their brains into understanding the most basic concepts about the world and the science of it all. I have friends who dont understand things I say to them sometimes. I reckon they're the happiest people I know. So I equate being stupid with being happier as you would have less to contemplate, or less ability to do so, and then may not start using drugs as most people do, to escape.
  10. I can understand the study. The people I work with I know drink like fish, crazy drinking. They just want to be able to turn their brain off!

I know I only smoke very late at night so that I can stop thinking!
  11. I have one phrase that will render everything this study purports null: "Intelligence cannot be measured."
That in mind, you can make no correlation between intelligence and substance use.

On another note, this study fails to identify and account for the thousands of other factors contributing to an individuals motivation to use "substances."

And just because something is evolutionarily novel does not indicate that it is "intelligent." Take, for example, suicide. It's evolutionarily novel. But is that really going to help advance the individual (or group for that matter)?
  12. @kagaos is that a picture of you flexing with your face blotted and a nuke shroom cloud behind you? lawl.
  13. stay gold ponyboy.

society and learned behaviors play more of a role than intelligence does. this 'study' can obviously be turned in any which way you'd like.
  14. I think it's not the substances that stimulate one's mind or causes one to be more intelligent. It's the fact that the person is willing to try something new, which goes to show their willingness as a person to be more open minded. Being intelligent is a direct result of open-mindedness. :)
  15. Eh, this is interesting but MANY stupid people use drugs.:p
  16. Everybody does drugs,,,,even the animals,,,,the safest mushrooms to pick are the ones the mice have been chewing on.
  17. this just in... everyone loves drugs, and everyone does them.
