Stopping gnats in soil & Coco (gnat wars)

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by growbigtmac, Dec 11, 2018.

  1. My setup:
Cyco coco coir w/perlite (also has wormcastings in middle of pot)
    10gal smart pots
    3plants
    Feeding FPJ and Earth Juice
Gets watered each day 1 1/2gals

I've been dealing with gnats for 3 months now, ever since I brought one of my outdoor plants inside due to cold weather and continuous rain/no sun. Since then these fucks have plaqued my grow area and there now all over the entire lower floor (where there's moist coco mainly seedlings).....long story short I've tried these main things:
    --Watering/spraying Neem oil on coco.
--Tried gnatnix doesn't work well wet..well doesn't work all that great when watering you end up with holes going to the soil. Plus I see them crawl right up from underneath the stuff no problem lol.
--nematodes BT been letting that do it's magic for about a month noticed small difference but nothing crazy.
--all while this is going on I'm using YELLOW sticky traps because they're drawn to it, flyers anyways.
--mosquito dunks (these didn't do a dam thing lol i even made the dunks into smallar pieces

Now my new plan is this....I've seen one video on it couple articles mention it but none give an end result or what else you should do to protect against another "attack" so I'll be doing this:
--Dulting a 32oz bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 2parts water for EACH plant.
--covering with "all purpose sand" 1inch of sand over top.
-- throwing some small stones on top to break the fall of the water when getting watered.
--laying down yellow sticky trap for each plant to catch flyers.
-- play Mr. Miyagi and start clapping gnats out of the air for a few days.

Cost me:14$ for the supplies I'm using

The hydrogen peroxide kills the larve of the gnat and maybe good bugs to? Not sure on the good bug one.

Has anyone tried this? Any success? I'm trying to be as nice as possible with now chemicals but if I can't then fuck it I can't... Any thoughts on this method? What's worked for you?

I'll update this thing if my problems are solved with this method!! 20181211_152051.jpg

  2. Gnats are pretty harmless man. Unless you get the kind with root eating larvae. I place sticky traps in each pot and hang a few around the room and that takes care of them for the most part. I also cover my pots with pea gravel or grow stones.

  3. Gnats are a no biggy

reduce water lay french fries uncooked on the soil top

worms are attracted to the smell

    good luck

  4. Yellow stickies for the flyers and 3 drenches with Gnatrol will kill the larvae. Works everytime for me.
I didn't have any luck with hydrogen peroxide.

  5. perlite is also a good mulch once you learn how to water it without spiling it all over the house. Increase airflow across top of medium, the yellow sticky? IDK, I keep a bucket of neem oil and Dr Bronners soap in the room. I have no gnat problem because I grow in pure perlite, but still catch a few in the bucket. They were all over when I was in coco. That's how I came up with the perlite mulch. And then eventually all perlite all the time. I'm even going back to germinating in pure perlite. It cures hoarsness.

  7. Ahh man that sucks!!! I'm still gonna try it but... shiittt I heard about the gnat control stuff but people said it doesn't work quick I feel like it would but I didn't want to spend on a bottle that may or may not work either. But if this really doesn't work I'm going with that stuff

  8. I assure you that Gnatrol works. It's a powder that mixes in your nute solution.

  9. higher thenshit. is it possible to let the top of your medium dry before you water? this will kill the mites as well

  10. Also in the future for IPM

I take peppermint essential oil extract and put 15 drops to a gallon in my humidifier. This has been the only thing I’ve had to do. I’ve never had bugs and it helps with the smell of the grow as well. Oh and the yellow traps like mentioned above.

The peppermint oil doesn’t mess with the smell or taste of my plants. In case that was a concern!

  11. I love peppermint. :)

  12. I take the never had any bugs in my grow as it’s working lol. Plus it masks any smell. The carbon filter works great but the peppermint really is just icing on the cake.

  13. same dawg...yeah I tried man I'd go like a couple days 3 max without watering I'm in coco shit drys quick...but when I did that they seem to multiple. Or just the same ones come out. And then I can't like catch all of them so the cycle continues..

  14. put some beer into a bowl in the room. these bugs will fly in and drown. this also helps. ok only use the very bottom of the beer make sure you bring a six pack in before trying to attempt to fill the bowl .

  16. Well let me update y'all. So it's been about a month...and I'm rarely seeing them...this definitely worked the best I do see 1 or 2 baby gnats flying rarely but I kill them if I see them right away....but I gotta say other then that this method definitely works about 95% I can't say 100% because it didn't get rid of "all of them for good". So it's true I would say fuck the organic way and just kill these fuckers with some serious shit and move on. But if your in a real living soil probably don't want to use some serious shit ...thanks for all the feedback guys !

  17. What did you use to get rid of them? If you mentioned that I missed it.

  18. Yeah man I just used hydrogen peroxide 3% 32oz bottles I have 10gallon pots and I Dulted it with 16oz of water but honestly you can just pour the hydrogen peroxide on the surface of the soil and it won't hurt anything I tried it on smaller plants they survived.

Anyways after all the bubbling stops I laid "general purpose sand" on the top of the soil. About an inch....after that didn't see a dam thing not even on my yellow sticky traps..

    So I used
    Hydrogen peroxide 3%
    General purpose sand
Cost for me to treat everything $14.66

And may I add I had 1 and a half bags of sand left
