stop and search rights in uk?

  1. i know that there are certain rights that can be used to prevent a vehicle search in america. organisations such as the ACLU are very clear on this, and a lot of guides have been published such as ''how to not get busted''.

    what are the stop and search rights in the uk?
    is propable cause needed for a vehicle search?
    if so what would be propable cause?
    can you be pulled over for no reason or is propable cause required for this too.
    what are, and arn't police allowed to search?

    if you had, for example a portable safe, the police ask to search it and you say that you don't know the combination/don't have a key, can they force it open? can they confiscate it from you?
