Stoned and thinking im a scientist (time, light, and blackholes)

  1. This thought came into my head. But im pretty high, so bare with me.

    We all know time can only travel as fast as the speed of light. Anybody read into Hawkings? Anywho, The universe is expanding at the speed of light. So Time = Speed of light. Thats how fast time goes. If one were to travel at the speed of light, they would literaly time travel.

    But what about slowing down time? If one could device a way to slow down light, one could slow down time. How do you slow down time without effecting mass?

    And finaly, if we were capable of doing this, would we find more information about black holes?

    :D

  2. Time probably does infact move at the speed of light!! Comprehending this absolutely BLOWS my mind.

    How can the universe be expanding at the speed of light though.. ? That would mean the universe is pretty much infinite.

    BTW: I also consider myself to be a scientist, but only when I'm stoned :D

  3. Well I just woke up and im pretty sober, so lemme explain hawkings theories the best I can.

    Basicly, you know how when an airplane goes by, it has a higher pitched sound as it approaches. When it passes and starts to leave, the sound is a bit more muffled and lower pitched sounding. This applies with anything sound related really, but an airplane gives the most obvious effects. This is because as it approaches, the sound waves are a bit tighter as it appoaches, causing the frequency to raise. As it passes, the waves are lengthened, causing a lower pitch.

    Well beleive it or not, light isnt much differant! When light comes toward us, it has differant frequencies, too! If I remember correctly, approaching light is more blue in color (giving a certant frequency, you can probably look it up) and red is a color of something traveling further. When the sun rises, it has more of these blue frequencies as the light travels toward us and the earth rotates towards the light. Once the sun starts to set, it has more of the red frequencies in the sky. Just observe sometime, its vauge but you will see it!

    Anywho, as we watch many of the galaxies, well notice that a high percentage of the majority of them have a red color to them (more scientificly, a lower frequency). Much like an airplane, if the frequency is lengthed, its leaving us. These gallaxies are getting further and further away from us. As these who knows how many gallaxies are growing further, it leads so some evidence as to of why the universe would be expanding.

    ~~~
    At the beginning of time (those first miliseconds), if the big band theory is correct, it all started with a microscopic grain in the "center" of the universe. There is nothing outside of this grain, as the grain is all that exists. Once you involve time, every second this grain expands in the speed of light. Thats 299,792,458 miles per second in a spherical like direction. And has continued to expand ever since, however many BILLION years ago (I think it was 440 billion, could be wrong).
    So in theory, there is nothing outside of the universe and the universe is infinite. But if one was able to travel the speed of light, they would match the speed of the expansion of the universe! This would basicly make time stand still for that person.
    If anybody is interested in REALLY getting to know these theories, check out Stephen Hawking's "The universe in a nutshell". Its easy to understand (for the most part) and full of AMAZING information. WORTH reading (And I RARELY read books)
  4. So you have determined that Time travels at the speed of light (thought the flow, substance and effect of time is still largely not known, even by theoretical physacists) because of the Doppler effect?
    All that does it prove that the universe is expanding, or at very least, celestial objects are moving away from one another at a constant rate.
    Also; the Big Bang is commonly known to have occured slightly under 14 billion years ago.
    I have heard many different theories about time travel, related to theoretical physics, string theory, revised string theory, etc. And even moving at a fraction the speed of light, which is already theoretically achieveable by perspective interstellar vessels, would increase the flow of time at an incredible rate.
    I don't really understand your connection to the speed of light and time though. Time is not part of the electromagnetic spectrum...
  5. haha... i always get the scientist effect when im high
    anyways, if the big bang theory is correct, what is considered the center of the universe? the big bang theory would make an ever-expanding sphere of light from the centerpoint. where is the centerpoint?
  6. I'm not entirley sure, but I think from out perspective it's impossible to tell. We're not able to determine what is exactly moving away from what. Though we can indeed determine astrological distance, there is no stationary object for us to determine and measure our movement to, or the movement of any other celestial objections.
  7. two watches with precise timers(1,000,000s to the second).
    one sits in place in a dorment state.
    the other is put on a plane, and is circled around the globe.
    both stopped axactly the same time.
    the flying watch reads a shorter time.
  8. I've heard this one too, but nothing beyond a myth.
    I have yet to see this on paper, with any kind of reputable sources.
  9. No, once again this is Steven Hawking's theory. Look it up, its great reading material.
    Info on Hawking...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Hawking
    And all I was doing was providing Modern Caveman with some info on teh speed of light and time.
    Here is a link with more great reading...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_theory_of_relativity
    Yeah Its been a while since I looked all that info up! :D I knew "billion" and "four" was in there. Thanx for the correction ;)
    Yet more great reading!
    Once again, Hawking is the one who put this theory out there. Basicly, because we cannot find anything faster than the speed of light and light seems instantanious to us, it is the true measurement of time.
    Not trying to argue with anybody here! Just putting out the info that I know. Its good to have a discusion like this! :D
  10. Hah, you definatley did your research.
    Thanks for clearing it up for me, bro! :)
    I'm still on Hawking's "Breif History of Time", so I admittedly am pretty new to his writing.
    I'm also reading "Imagining the 10th Dimension", which is a pretty interesting perspective on string-theory. Check it out, I'd definatley recommend it, it's a good read.
    rep + btw.
  11. Yeah Hawking has some interesting things out there! A brief history of time is one of his best books. I get a bit lost when we start talking the p-brane strings though... :D
  12. Interesting stuff guys.
  13. I was high once with a buddy at the lake and was looking up at the stars and started to think how our atmosphere keeps out Outer-Space. Because you would think that because there is space in between air particles that it would let Outer-Space come in. But then I figured that there must be some kind of force which resembled that of magnetism which seperates each particle from each other and keeps an Air tight seal around the earth especially when gravity is involved and is pushing all the partles together.
  14. Its amazing, isnt it? I constantly think of questions in my head on why things are the way they are, ESPECIALY space.
  15. Hawkings states that its impossible for matter. however big or small to travel at the speed of light,which means that we could not do that...
