http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...1&u=/ap/20041007/ap_on_go_co/internet_spyware I hope they make it illegal, i have seen it mess up many a computer. My parents computer got so much on it, it would have like 100 popups when u started it up. It was insane.
just remember man..it only starts with that! They will then have jurisdiction over the internet..allowing them to bust music piraters, and will be able to more effectively monitor your surfing habits. Who knows...in a few years we may not even be able to order a bong from our beloved city..
only if you live in america, no way our congress has any jurisdiction over a website based in the netherlands. Last time they did something like this, it was spam, and all I ever heard was talk, nothing ever happened
this will almost certainly suprise many of you ... Windows Media Player... is spyware. Windows (take your pick, XP, 2000, NT, ME) ... is spyware. Realplayer ... is spywayre. (if you didnt know that you shouldnt even be using a computer) you could even say that your pop-up-blocker, your antivirus software or even your software firewall are spyware!!!!! infact, there are dozens of pieces of software you use that are all spyware. and in the cases i've just mentioned above, you cannot turn of the spyware aspect without hampering the "normal" functions of the software. the term "spyware" is very very loose. this over simplification of the issue "ooh, should we alow spyware" is detracting from the real issue. who's doing the spying, what are they spying on (what info are they getting on you), and who are they sharing all that info with? even the discussions over "well is it maliscious?" and "is it without your consent?" are bullshit. there are already privacy laws in place that are supposed to safegaurd us all against such things, but these cats play by a different rule book. well, its the same book really, its just they they are reading the part that lets them get away with it. Microsoft and Echelon are buddies, surely. how could they not be!? *shrugs* like cowofsteel says... they aint gonna do shit. if they do, you can bet yo ass they still spying. if you would like more info on this, go visit http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com or http://www.microsuck.com as they are now trying to be known so kids can learn too. of particular relevance to this is the section on Microshaft Window's really really hidden files. heh, just call me a cynic, but i'd prefer not to have the worlds most powerful white men know every tiny little detail about me and every click of the mouse i've ever done. I call it Liberty, or freedom, or inailienable human rights. heck, even just call it privacy. I'm funny about such things.
"accurate observation is often called cynisysm by those without" --some old guy thats like one of my favorite quotes to bad i cant spell cynisysm right... :-\
I am majoring in information technology, and i see how bad the problem is. It is kind of a cop-out, i mean i was mad when they shut down napster, and i still dl today so i know there will be ways around, if any thing at all comes from this. I just really dont like the shit, it really fucks up alot of peoples computers, alot of middle aged and older people who are not eather aware of the problem or dont know how to fix it. I think it is 25 bucks at best buy just to look at it and all they do is reformat and they charge another 35 or 40 bucks to do that. I have really good security on my network so it doesnt bother me and im not worried about the govt tracking me down. They will have a tough time.

While that is true, they are not the same as the "spyware" they are trying to make illegal. You buy a computer, you know it has media player, and if you want, you can uninstall. With these other spyware programs, first you never know they are on your computer. They mess up your computer. Getting rid of them can be a big hastle. I should have been more clear, but the spyware like media player and such are not even in the same catagory as what they are talking about. Lets say spyware is like guns. Guns are legal, but when u aubse them, you use them for illegal activity, then you get in trouble. It is ok to own a gun but not ok for you to shoot someone. You can have spyware "media player, real player" but when you abuse it, use it to mess up peoples computers and things like that, i think it should be illegal and there should be a law about it, IMO.
