I've been reading some Richard Dawkins lately, and seeing a particular space thread in Pandoras Box that left me breathless , I just wanted to share this little fact with everyone, because when I read it, it blew my mind.

This is directed to any of those people (I was one) that is sort of dumbfounded by the way the earth is in such perfect conditions for our type of life, and may see no other solution but intelligent design (God put us here) as possible.

Using conservative numbers, it has been estimated there is at least 1 billion/1000 000 000 planets in our galaxy (The Milky Way).

Again using conservative numbers, it has been estimated there is at least 1 billion/ 1000 000 000 other galaxies in our universe.

So lets say the chances of having these perfect livable conditions (sun being in the perfect spot for water to be utilized) is 1 in a billion. The chances don't get much higher than that. Again, thats 1 in 1 000 000 000.

If those chances are correct there would be an ADDITIONAL 1 billion/ 1000 000 000 plants with the same livable conditions as earth.

This just shows how huge our universe is and how we are probably not alone.

Edit, here's that amazing thread http://forum.grasscity.com/pandoras-box/541044-so-just-how-small-we.html

  2. I've seen a similar picture, it really does put things in perspective. There's no way Earth is the only planet with life. There's no way humans are the only intelligent species in the universe, or even the galaxy. What is true is that space is vast. It's enormous. The technology needed to travel to other star systems is so far beyond our current tech that some scientists consider it impossible and say we'll never travel outside of our own system. We may never actually meet another intelligent species. Then again, with so many stars and planets and galaxies, it's very possible the technology exists and is being used... and we just haven't been found or nobody gives a shit.

Who knows, the popular theory is that we were created by God so its fairly pointless in our lifetime.

  3. It's mind boggling just how massive space is. I mean...it's so nuts to even think about how far it is to the moon, that shit is far as fuck to us. And that's nothing compared to how far away the next planet is....and THAT'S nothing compared to how far away it is to another galaxy.

Our sun...the fucking Sun! is microscopic compared to the largest sun we've discovered. If you put them next to each other, you couldn't even see our's next to it!

And then, if you down in scale, it's just as fucking crazy. Like, we can't even see a cell with our eyes, even big ones. And cells are huuuuge compared to atoms, and atoms are huuuuuuge compared to sub-atomic particles! And that's probably, not even the smallest thing there is!

  4. The size of the Universe is truly unimaginable as a whole.....its mind blowingly big as you understand.....and the chances that there are other life forms out there is greater than not....I agree with you on all counts. My only wish is to be able to fly in an alien spaceship from planet to planet visiting all my alien brothers lol....that would be sickkk!

  5. Richard Dawkins is awesome. I love Hubble. Man, that thing gets such amazing shots of EVERYTHING.

But yeah, there has to be life somewhere else, even if they're just amoebas or slimy aliens.

  6. Dude, there's so many possibilities that we can't even think of. Aliens in movies and stuff are always at least sort of like creatures that could live here on earth. Like, think of how different they could be. There could be an alien race that doesn't need oxygen. Or one that gains energy by absorbing carbon and breaking it down internally. They would be really hot, and like...just absorb anything organic (or just pure carbon).

An alien could be like....anything. And then to start thinking about how different they might be. What if we find some, and there's just like, animals. They don't communicate or anything. Or what if we get to another planet, and we just find some shit that behaves like trees. They just exist, and don't aknowledge our existence at all. There might be shit out there that doesn't have organs....they just take in sunlight and that's it. There could also be like, organisms that don't even need matter to sustain themselves, just sunlight or some other form of energy.

Okay that got kind of long, sorry. I could go on about this shit all day.

  7. I would suggest reading a Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nut Shell by Stephen Hawking.

I love reading about the universe, time, and existence.

Lately I've been reading a lot of stuff dealing with the perception of fourth and higher dimensions.

I believe there's extra dimensional beings that control existence. They are our gods and we are unable to perceive them because of the sheer microscopic size of our feeble minds.

Looking through those pictures made my day. +rep :)
