I did put Soy Bean Meal as a "seed meal" in my last soil mix. To be completely honest, I'm not exactly sure if it did me well, or not - dont get me wrong, everything is friggin' super, but I'm just not exactly sure what the Soy Bean Meal did for me.

    Its in my mix tho...*lol*

Sorry, MIW - wish I could have been more help.

    EDIT: -

    See here. http://www.basic-info-4-organic-fertilizers.com/organicfertilizers.html

This is some great basic information regarding most soil ammendments/additives. As far as Soybean Meal goes, this is what they say:

Soybean Meal is a high-nitrogen fertilizer. To get the best price, search for it at animal feed-supply stores. Greenhouse research showed that soybean meal can prevent the germination of small seeds. ( I have seen before that Soybean Meal can be used to prevent weeds, because of this property) Soybean Meal is 7 % Nitrogen, 2 % Phosphorus and 1 % Potassium. Application rate: 4 pounds per 100 square feet. Soybean meal fertilizer is a high protein feed that when broken down by microbes provides natural organic nitrogen. It provides a soluble form of phosphorous. Like alfalfa meal, it is particularly beneficial to nitrogen-loving plants, such as roses.

The main issue (discussion) about soybean meal centers around the GMO vs non-GMO versions. Around here both are usually available with the conventional (GMO) costing $21.00 for 50 lbs. and the organic version (non-GMO) is $35.00 - pretty substantial increase. Sometimes this amendment is sold as 'de-fatted soybean meal' - well, duh! Press the oil out of it and I guess it would be 'de-fatted' eh?

Very rich in Nitrogen and Phosphorus and a wide range of enzymes, amino acids, proteins, etc. A lot of bang for the buck.

Here's some information from the agriculture school at North Carolina State University which also happens to be one of the main research schools on vermicomosting if you're interested in digging around their site.

  4. Would the "Genetically Modified" version affect organic growing negatively?

    Just wondering.

With what I read, and am hearing now, I'm glad its in my mix. I did only buy like a 5 pound bag (Organic - so I suppose its not "GMO") though at the local "feed store".

  5. Jerry

If the soybean meal is labeled organic then it is definitely non-GMO - GMO = Monsanto's criminality

  6. Just did some quick (very interesting) searching cuz I didnt know who Monsanto was...

DDT, Agent Orange, Saccharin, GMO's, LED's, aspartame, bovine growth hormones and pcb's...and on and on and on. I had no idea.

  7. Ya that, and they own the regulators. They sue farmers whose crops were accidentally pollinated with stray pollen. They are the american al qaeda, they put the evil in our bodies with unlimited power and govt corruption, and are responsible for many more deaths than al qaeda.......MIW

  8. The first thing I think about when buying any type of "meal" "seed meal" is the concern of them being GMO. I would say before buying any thing of this sort to just do your research well. I was totally unaware of the nasty things inside of GMO products until I came about a post of LD's a while back ago.

  9. Here's another contribution by Monsanto to enrich your lives.

Monsanto's preservative, Ethoxyquin, first arrived on the scene in the post-Korean War period. Because it's so widely used in the commercial fishing industry, this preservative finds its way into fish by-products like fish meal (duh!).

From fish meal there are many things extracted - fish oil for example, omega oils, enzymes, proteins and on and on. This preservative lives on so getting 'the good stuff' for you and your family is something to consider perhaps.

It shows up in pet foods and is debated widely and I'll leave it at that. It also shows up in livestock feeds (a huge market) and with bovine in particular, this Monsanto product causes a lot of problems in the digestive systems. I'm not a livestock guy but this my understanding.

Oregon Tilth debated this issue about 4 years ago and denied the request for allowing fish meals containing Ethoxyquin in organic food production. Washington state's organic certification agency has a similar petition and hopefully the petition will be denied.

True organic fish meal can be sourced from feed and farm stores under the name Naturox.

"Better living through modern chemistry" - Monsanto Exhibit from the 1960's at Disneyland. Rather fitting and all.

  10. allowing fish meals containing Ethoxyquin in organic food production

If Ethoxyquin isnt organic how could they even petition something like this? Just cuz they're The Big Guy with lotsa $$?

Depressing. I bet they get alot of hate mail *lol*
