Is so fucking hard, when you don't know what you're doing. Every once in a while I get a strange inspiration to try to write some tunes. But getting the music to mesh with the lyrics, or even getting on off on a good foot, is so FUCKING hard. Anyone out there write music? How the hell do you manage it? (apart from copious amounts of drugs) Is there some sort method you use?
When I compose music I try not to over think what i'm doing. Sitting down and saying "I'm going to write a killer song now!" has never worked for me. I have to hear an idea in my head or playing or be musically inspired by something to compose. I also try not to think about a particular group or instrumentation for a song when first starting out so that doesn't distract from the direction the tune is taking. Also try to develope themes and motifs through out the piece to give it shape and flow. Think about dynamic contrast. Remember, less is usually more, a song doesn't necessarily get better by getting more complicated. Composing songs should come from the same creative place that playing does so PASSION is the most important thing. I hope that helps!
Its not too hard bro when i sit down to write some tunes i just fuk around with my guitar till i get somthing i like or i aim for a certain direction but remember do what comes natural dont force urself to write . When i have a full song down on guitar applying lyrics is even easier. A good way is just hummin melodie sover ur rythem and after apply the lyrics to ur melodies.
Completely right! Overthinking the entire thing is the first mistake. You can't write a great song by just deciding to do so. One piece of advice i can offer is just to make it simple. Simplicity is key. Jot down a few lines, no big deal, throw some chords to it, and then go from there.
get a recording software program, thats what i do. i have a hard time remembering riffs and licks that i write so i just lay them down on that. audacity is a really good free recording software, just go to the webiste and download it. its really easy to use, i highly recommend using that in your writing process.
Thanks for the replys guys, I'll try out some of those suggestions next time. Does anyone (particularly if you're in a band) write with a friend, or group? I've been wanting to get some of my musician friends over for a jam, but havent gotten the chance.
I always have a synth directly to my right when I'm here, so that definitely helps. Usually, when I get some inspiration I pick a key and a scale, and start messin' around with it. I've gotten some of the best trip hop I've ever written just using a straight C Jazz Minor on a bass and keys with a simple drum beat under it. Lyrics, can be much trickier. Generally, unless the lyrics have a very strong rhythm to them, don't try to write the music around them. Write the music first, then fit in the words. Joints def. don't hurt, but a lot of the time whatever you wrote will be a joke sober. Don't be afraid to be creative and different. Find other musicians, it's hard I know, believe me, I have about 6 solo projects going, but find some friends to jam with on occasion, it's a blast!
If you think in your mind for a certain rythem or lead that will fit and your forcing it. it will not come. You have to let if flow out. I personally love writting music all the time. anyone want to start a band ?
This is exactly right. You don't need a million complicated riffs interwoven to create a huge jumble of ideas; you need strong main themes that you can build off of using dynamics and variations. This creates songs while throwing a bunch of riffs together creates, well... a collection of riffs.
