Something is eating my stalk (pics)

  1. Ok so something is eating away or deteriorating my stalk at the base of my rockwool, I have never seen this before and am 100% sure that its not any type of insect.(at least not one you can see with your eyes)? Is thats some type of Mold or fungus? Or possibly a disease? Any help would be appreciated.

And this is what the plants look like as a whole. (pretty Happy I think)

If you have any Idea whats going on and how I can stop it I would really appreciate it.

  2. Are you letting the rockwool dry out completely between waterings? Other than that, I'd cover the rockwool with some hydroton to keep it out the light.

  3. I would say you have a cutworm. They will kill a plant real quick by girdling it, just like in your pic.

    Wet

  4. The top of the rockwool does almost dry out b4 watering, but the bottom 25% is still a little moist, should i let it dry out more? Its not cutworm. Im sure of it.

  5. Well, I'm glad you are so sure, but that damage sure as shit isn't from overly moist rockwool. Something is chewing on it.

    Wet

  6. Looks like stem rot to me, which is probably from overly wet rockwool. Guess something could be eating it though.

  7. ok fair enough but im running an ebb and flow system. Wouldnt a cutworm float to the top when its time for watering? and its the middle of winter here...nothing is alive outside and ive never seen a moth here....ever. Im not saying your wrong but I wanna make sure before digging to find that bastard...its seems really unlikely...

  8. I'd water less often, let everything try out completely in between waterings. Keep an eye out for bugs too. Other than that, I dunno.

  9. No need to dig.

You WILL need some BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis).

I would also get some sort of collar around those stems. If they get completely girdled, the whole plant will die.

Fungus/rot, gets soft and brown and doesn't have that 'chewed' look. My kid just walked in, took one look at your pic and goes " Wow! Looks like a beaver's been eating that plant".
