  1. Ok so I took these clones 14 days ago the plants they came off were 14 days into flower. I cut the clone and used a gel (I know the gel is definitely not organic but the grow will be) and peat cubes that came with the seed starter kit I got from htg. They have been in the tray and dome since day 1 heat is between 80-90 the humidity 60-70%.

The base of the stem were they enter the cube is swelling up? But no roots are showing out the bottom. They had little hairs and the earliest starting of buds. The hairs have gone from white to red. They still look alive.

Should I give up on them and move on or is there a chance they will still root? I really don't want to lose these strains. Adding a pic of them, and the stem that's bigger inside the cube.

    Thanks for any input.

  2. Whud up friend? When cuttings root, first there is little bumps that grow on the stem, then roots start from those bumps. I don't remember ever seeing red roots, could they be stained from something you gave them? Humic acid? The most common problem is probably root rot from roots being too wet. Those roots will be brown and mushy.

Anyway I would not keep looking at the roots, after all they are photo sensitive. In my experience in a tray/hood system, you can tell when roots are starting because they take energy from the leaves. In two to three weeks after starting you will get yellowing on the leaves. That tells me roots have started, and it's when i transplant into larger pots.....MIW

What MIW said. I wouldnt give up on them at all. The leaves, for the most part, are still green. Cuttings are pretty hardy things man. Give them some more time - first you get the swelling and the little bumps, and then the roots shoot out.

    Patience is a virtue. :)

Oh, and if possible, try and take cuttings from vegging ladies. I know its not always possible, and I have taken clones many times, successfully, from just-starting-to-bud gals, but it just doesnt work as well.

MIW, I believe that BeZ was referring to the white/red hairs on the little flowers that were on the cuttings he took.

BeZ - I bet they take just fine. Let 'em go another week and then check 'em out again. I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Keep us posted please, and have a nice day! :)

  4. Wassup MIW, GO BLUE!!!
Thanks for the quick responses fellas, I haven't lost all hope at all, its just I was talking to a friend and he said if there's no roots showing at all after 14 days then I should throw them out (yeah right) but like jerry said there still green so I figured that must mean some kind of life. I haven't given them any kind of nutrition just a little tap water on the bottom of the tray to keep them moist and humid.

Yes jerry your right I was referring to the hairs on the little buds the color has changed like its does in flower from white to pinkish purple now redish brown depending on the strain. There are no roots showing....yet.

It really was unavoidable I wasn't ready for clones until the mothers were already flowering (there not really "mothers" but Idk how else to label them, they are gonna be fully harvested).

Would you guys suggest adding anything to the water? Maybe soak a teaspoon or so of kelp meal in a cup of water for a day then put some in the tray or directly on the pods.

Btw I'm adding my motivation for keeping the clones alive, imo the prettiest one but I love them all. Nothing from my last grow even compares.

  5. My mistake I thought i read red root hairs, must have been listening to sammy hagar, lol. Taking clones from flowering plants can be done successfully, but might take a little longer. I have taken cuttings up to three weeks in flower. Those cuts were maybe two weeks or so behind those taken from vegging moms. The tiny buds will slowly go away, as the hormones switch modes to veg once again. The length of time required seems to be strain dependent, IE some take longer than others.....MIW

  6. 2 things -

First, I have had strains that for some reason took to the point of yellowing leaves before they finally rooted and greened back up -

2nd, yes, just a tiny bit of some kind of food will be just fine!

They will take. Patience, and good luck.

    Jerry.

  7. Thanks again guys.

Is there a light cycle recommendation for my situation there on 24 now I don't have a timer yet. I can get one tomorrow if necessary, I will need it anyway but I haven't been to town lately.

  8. BeZ, you gotta realize that they're not only trying to root, but they're going through hormonal changes. Since they were at 12/12 and now the light schedule is longer, it's going to take more time but they they will root and be just fine.

As long as they are green and healthy, just be patient. The payoff from rooting a flowering cutting is that it will develop several main stems once the plant develops roots.

    All the best,

  9. Hi Bez.

    Just checking on your cuttings?

    roots?

    jerry.

  10. What's up jerry. 4 of 5 have been transplanted I don't think the last one is gonna root but its ok its a double anyway plus I already have 2 more than I want, I took in a couple orphan clones from a friend a black jack and a cheese now I'm doing 8 strains with 10 plants its a little crazy for me but ill be able to pick a couple strains I like and scrap the rest or give away.

Btw I appreciate your interest, thanks bro.

  11. 4 lived and are now in flower they have all been cloned twice last Friday, today they all are showing roots. Unfortunately I am using a cloning bucket and a aerogarden herb garden a friend gave me, the unfortunate thing is I used the clonex gel rooting hormone I used last time, not very organic I think. But as of now the machines have rooted 15 of 15, the peat cubes in a humidity dome last time did 4 of 16 and 3 weeks to root the 4 that did.

So for now this is it for me water is natural I just need to make an organic rooting hormone. I plan on gathering some willow branches,if u can call them branches more like vines, there's a couple huge ones close by I can get to with no questions but I'm unclear of what to do with it exactly and what parts to take and how to keep it or how long it will stay good for before I need more or if u can do it from bare branches in the winter?
Some help with this would be very much appreciated I can experiment while I'm vegging.

    Thanks, BeZ...V

  12. Howdy BeZ,

The hormone in willow branches that is associated with rooting is called salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is also found in Aloe Vera juice along with other compounds that are useful in rooting.

If you look for Aloe Vera juice, look for a product that uses citric acid as a preservative rather than sodium benzoate. Lily of the Desert brand uses citric acid and is available at most health food stores.

Good job on the 15/15 rooting.....and good luck with your grow!

  13. Hi Bez. Glad to hear the clones worked out for you. I would imagine the aloe would be easier at least. Heard about the willow, but never tried it.

    jerry.

  14. I know it's been said but to help solidify responses. If you got green perky cuttings then never give up on em. I use a homemade aero cloner and some take 10days and some I have to let go clear to 17-20 days but unless I see signs of decay or the cutting has completely yellowed out and wilted I never throw them out. If I went by the rule of 14 days I would have about 50% success rate with my cuttings but waiting longer has put me around 80-90% success.

And as well as aloe I've read that natural honey contains rooting hormones as well but the consensus is definitely aloe vera. But I'm not expert on the more organic methods myself since I use gel and KLN in my res I'm not organic durring cloning just the rest of the way
