Some DTE advice...

  1. Greetings.

I am in the process of going organic, have read a good bit but am pretty new.

I just acquired a box of Down To Earth All Purpose Mix 4-6-2 natural fertilizer, which I am planning to use as a top dressing bloom fert and late stage veg fert.

Does anyone have experience with this product and have confidence to advise me as to how to gauge how much to use?

I am in Roots organic soil, big pots some 18gal, some 25gal, some indoor, some outdoor.

I also plan to add high P guano a little later on, and some teas as well.

The directions on the box are for mixing in soil or side dressing for plants of undetermined size.

I need to know how much to apply.

I guess I could just start really low and work up, but that could cost me some time.

Can anyone offer any guidance on this?

    Many thanks...

    Grooves.

  2. Anyone?

I just top dressed one 4ft plant in 18 gal organic soil with 3 tablespoons

and one 7ft outdoor plant in 25 gal with 6 tablespoons.

    Sound ballpark?

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

    Grooves.

  3. How much of what is in there is water soluable vs not? DTE usually has a lot of information on the back of their boxes.

Also, you have to take into consideration that a lot of these boxed dry soil ammendments arent usable right away. Sometimes it can take months of living soil activity to break these dry ammendments down and process them into something usable.

DTE's products are great, personally it sounds like you should be more into using their liquid ingredients at the moment. Try making some tea's out of their guanos. They have a product called MicroFlora(I believe). It's like 25 percent humic acids, 17 percent molasses, and a plethora of bacterias and beneficials.
Mix this into a guano tea when it's starting / top dress this product(it is entirely water soluable).

My suggestion is if you're going to use dry boxed ammendements, figure out what's water soluable and mobile vs immobile first, and find out a good mixture of everything. After mixing it into your soil, give it a few months. At this point your soil should be pretty much completely usable. Run a plant through it, and write down the results or issues. then you know what else you need to remove or add.

  4. Apply 5-6 lbs. per 100 sq feet. This is the official application rate from DTE.
