Soils and perlite

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Michael A, Aug 11, 2018.

  1. I am new to using perlite. I added it to the soil when I recently Transplanted to a 7 gallon bucket. I am wondering, do I need to increase the watering now that perlite is present? Does the soil dry faster?

  2. the mix is about %40 perlite %60 soil.
a little more than i had originally intended on.
was going for 30/70. oops. lol

  3. 40% perlite is fine you’ll get better aeration in your buckets. I would get to know the weight of your pots before and after watering by just lifting your buckets. let it dry out and it should be lite to the lift then water if it feels heavy wait a few days.
    Good luck

If you are using coco, then what ever percent perlite you use won't matter, as you will still need to water / feed every day when the plant matures. But if you are using soil, FF, pro mix, etc, then using anything over 25% perlite will result in one having to water more often when their plant(s) mature. I will give you example... say you are growing in 7 gallon pots, and you have vegged for 2 months, a healthy plant grown in a healthy environment at 4 weeks into flower using a 40% perlite mix will need to be watered at the start of every 3rd day, a plant grown in a 25% perlite mix will just need to be watered at the start of every 4th day. And those watering / feeding times will grow shorter and shorter the longer the total flowering period lasts.
