Soil Change?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Aaronl8n, Jan 10, 2007.

  1. I started the plant that i have now (10 days old) in miricle grow potting mix. I have read that this is bad so i bought Fox Farm Organic soil. I am wondering how am I suppose to get the plant out of the miricle grow and how do i rinse off the miricle grow without harming the rootS? all help would be great

    thanks

  2. Good question question man.. I will help you bump this up till one of our GC master grower's comes and saves the day.. I too started with the wrong soil (scotts with added phos) so if this little girl of mine is gonna grow im definetly going to need to change the soil.. and to many what ifs come in to play.. Do we take the old soil and mix? does playing with roots come into play? shaking all stuff off?

  3. while i am certainly not a master...
... you need to transplant to the foxfarm soil by turning the current pot upside down remove the plant gently and then remove as much of the other soil as possible as long as its not too wet it shouldnt be too difficult (just brush it off with your fingers or dip it in water). you dont have to get it all just be gentle when handling it or you may do more harm than good. when you have removed the bulk of it just make a whole in the fox farm and place the plant roots down in there and refill... should be fairly easy for you :)

  4. will it put the plant in shock?

  5. i suppose it could put put your plant into a shocked state... however i think if you are careful you will be ok. i transferred all of mine from jiffy pellets to pete cups then to 1 gallon pots... just dont concentrate on trying to remove TOO much of that dirt... just let the loose stuff fall off and gently place the plant into its new home... and home for the best.

good luck and take your time

  6. make sure the soil is moist, not wet... this will help the soil to stick together while you are re-potting.

I assume your using a plastic pot, not a ceramic one.
Press the sides of the pot together in several different spots around the pot.
This will loosen the soil from the insides of the pot.

Place your hand on top of the soil, with the stem fitting between two of your fingers.
Tip the whole pot and plant upside into your hand.
Trying to keep as much of the plant and roots together.
I would get some bigger pots if i were you to re-pot into...
you can remove about 2/3 of the soil around the roots but try not to disturb the roots too much as they are delicate.
If there is dirt attached to the root leave it there....a little bit of the miracle grow soil won't hurt it.
Have your new pot already ready for the plant to go into - have the new soil ready and a hole dug. place the plant into the new soil and add more soil to the top if needed.
    Give it a water.
    thats pretty much it.
now ask questions if you have any.

  7. ill clear some thing's up for you,

the only reason miracle grow potting soil is bad is because it contains inorganics, which are time-release fertilizers to allow garden plants to thrive on this supplied nutrients for the entire vegetative and flowering season, the npk ratio is high nitrogen %, lower or the same phosphorus/potassium %

for marijuana, this is a good ratio for vegetation, but marijuana needs low nitrogen and higher phosphorus/potassium for flowering.

when days become shorter then 18 hours, flowering commences and the time release will continue and only stress your plant and keep it in vegetation longer.

alway's use organic from start to finish and add your own inorganic fert, changing the npk ratio once growth cycles change.

keep the root ball intact and transplant into organic, ThriveAlive B-1 vitamin helps during transplant, stress, and builds strong root structure.
