Sociology major/degree

  1. Sup city,

So I am a freshman in college and still undecided on my major. I am 20 years old and I have never had a decisive idea on what i want to do as a career. I have been searching for something that i enjoy, but i also need something that will actually make some money. I always felt that it was foolish to go to college if you are going to be making $35,000 a year afterward(no offense to teachers, etc).

So until now i haven't found anything that i like and that I also see as achievable(i've thought about the pharmaceutical industry, but i don't think i have it in me to make it). So last semester i took sociology101, and this semester i am taking sociology201, and i have found it is something that interests me quite a lot. The only problem is that as far as I've understood, sociology is one of those degrees that is very limited with legitimate jobs. It seems like most sociologists just end up working as a teacher or proffessor, which is something i definitly would not like to do.

So i come with the question: what could i really do as a job with my sociology degree, if i decide on taking this route? I tried to look on google, but didn't any very good info.
Let me just say i'm not interested in being any kind of teacher, nor am i interested in being a social worker or anything like that. Any input is welcome, esecially if there are any sociology majors on here.

    Thanks city,

    Love2trip

  2. a lot of people end up getting a job that has nothing to do with what they majored in college.

  3. you could get a job as a counselor at a school or college. they get paid pretty well.

  4. Maybe you could major in something else and have a minor in sociology? I cant think of anything you would like. Part of going to college is to figure your self out and what you like to do. A large number of people completly change there mind on what they want to do. Good luck tho

You said it yourself, sociology is a limited degree when it comes to slapping it down on a resume. So why structure your career and income around the subject knowing this? Although what Tiffany said is very true.

Just don't rush into it because you're developing an interest and seems like it may be the best choice atm. Don't feel pressured. If you have passion for a subject along with desire and dedication, you will do well.

I might be biased, but I would suggest considering an economics course. It delinates human interaction better than any sociology course can-- much more accurately anyway. You might find it interesting.

  6. IT field FTW

  7. Most sociology majors require a series of statistics courses. While sociology isn't the best thing on a resume, major employers looking to fill finance or business administration positions love to see a background in statistics.

See if you can use the classes you need to take for sociology to build towards a minor in statistics as well. If you're not up for it, that's okay too, just emphasize the statistics experience you accrue working on sociology projects in your resumes/cover letters.

Saying something like "Experience building statistical models based on survey data" looks good on a resume, is relevant to businesses today, and is also something that you'll probably have to do as part of a sociology major anyway.

If you love it, go for it!
