  1. Alright guys on gc what do you think about socialism? Do you think socialism could help America or bring upon our downfall? I want to hear your opinions

  2. Naw. Could never. Work. Period.

    It wouldn't work in general.

And making that switch with the millions of people in America would just crumble the system.

  3. Do you think if America was founded on socialism we would be better off? Less private ownership of material objects and more nessity only would be good or bad, what do you think

  4. Why would u want to erase freedom for socialism

  5. Socialism, historically, does not work. At all. Why would you want to try something that's been proven to fail? Even China is only enjoying prosperity because they granted more economic freedom to the markets.

  6. Socialism is for idiots.

  7. You can't have freedom and socialism, simple as that.

  8. The US has an irrational fear of Socialism...
It goes back to the "Cold War" and the work of loo la's like Joe McCarthy. The governments of the time whipped the US public up into a frenzy instilling a fear of Socialism that is as strong today as it was 50 years ago.

Eventually you will see Socialism in the US but we will have to wait for the NeoCons to fall and Libertarians to take over.

Then Socialism and Communism will be free to flourish...

  9. Such a compelling argument

  10. You mean you can't have socialism without democracy...

  11. yes privatize everything

  12. Socialism provides short term relief for people that suck at life, but provides them the perverse incentive to continue sucking.

    Therefore, society will suck.

Socialism wasn't feared during the 50's, it was communism, more specifically the Leninist/Stalinist Communism. Who could blame them Stalin's purges in the '30's killed thousands voices of opposition. Communism and Socialism are different in todays terms.

I doubt socialism will be in the US anytime soon. Also I don't think socialism could work in a nation as geographically enormous, or socially diverse as the US.

  14. Same difference, you can't have freedom and democracy really.

  15. Socialism is a pretty diverse political philosophy, and in order to judge the efficacy of it, you have to define your terms. Market socialism? Pure socialism? Social Democracy?

  16. Yes but most Americans i come across seem confused and do not realize there is a difference...
As for what happened under Stalin etc was far from what Communism actually is.
Stalin took Communism and warped and twisted it to suit him. In a true pure Communist or Socialist state there would be no dictator.

Socialism could work on a state basis in the US. But first there would have to be radical changes and the ones to clear the way are the Libertarians.
In a Libertarian USA states would be free to do what they wanted.

Yes the communism implemented by Stalin was vastly different that what Marx had in mind. Also Marx didn't expect communism to flourish in Eastern Europe, he thought it would first show up in Britain or France, but corporations started to give in to worker demands to ease the tensions.

However the USSR showed that a dictatorship, will not relinquish power. Especially when men have worked for 30+ years to get to the top. If communism could cone to be without a brutal dictatorship I think people would be much more open to the idea.

In a Libertarian America I do not see socialism rising up on a Federal level, although it would be much easier to transition to than this corporatist utopia. Individual states I think would be places where socialism would be the easiest to come to be.

  18. Socialism doesnt take away freedome lol. Everyone in every government pays taxes no matter what.

Socialism just puts taxes towards things like education and health Care instead of tanks and tax cuts for the Rich.

  19. Says Socialism doesn't take away freedom. Cites being forced to pay taxes as the reason.
