I have 5 outdoor plants growing and was wondering if having them in the open is safe with California med laws? Two locked gates with fences on both sides and a decent sized hill with cacti to my neighbors backyard which has a wall is what I'm working with....should I cage them or not worry about cops since it all seems secure?

yes you are fine. I have been growing plants in socal backyards for decades. One time, a crack addict being chased by the police, barracaded himself in an abandon house that was for sale behind my house. The SWAT team (yes I said swat) came through my back yard (2 barking labradors) walked by about 10 plants I had growing, ignored them, and concentrated on getting that crack addict behind my house. I thought for sure I was a goner. The plants were flowering and stunk to high heaven, so I know they knew they were there. They said nothing to me about the plants. The leader of the swat team explained to me what they were doing. Apparrently, the crack addict was wanted by police for over a year and they finally got him. Never said a word about my plants. And I counted 12 swat team members!! Local police in my town turn thier head on small quanities of marijuana. If I had 200 plants growing and they had to go through the plants to get to that back house, they might have taken note. But they really dont give a crap about small quanities. I think they would be embarrassed if they came in with a bust for a small quanity. Nowdays they are going after kilos and kilos of the stuff being brought in by cartels or being distributed illeagelly. So Cal pot smoking rules!!!
