NORAD: Burning Debris In Sky Was Russian Rocket

Military Reported The Streaking Light Over Colorado May Have Crashed In Wyoming

    Paul Day
    Reporting

(CBS4) DENVER The brilliant streak of light that raced across the sky west of Denver Thursday morning was a Russian rocket re-entering the atmosphere, NORAD and U.S. Northern Command reported.

NORAD spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Sean Kelly said the agency was trying to confirm a report that a piece of the rocket may have hit the ground near Riverton, Wyo., at about 6 a.m. MST. Kelly said military personnel had not yet reached the scene.

No damage was reported and the debris was not believed to be hazardous, NORAD said.

Kelly said U.S. spacewatchers knew the spent SL4 rocket was coming down. "Objects falling from space are almost an everyday occurrence," he said.

The French telescope satellite COROT was launched Dec. 27 from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Russia. It will monitor 120,000 stars, and researchers hope it will help them locate new planets during its nearly three-year mission.

Kelly said there was no known connection between the rocket and an object that fell from space Wednesday over New Jersey.

Copter4 was able to captured the debris on tape as it flew over Denver.

Chris Peterson, an astronomer and research associate with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science tracks sightings of debris that fall to Earth from space.

Peterson said a rocket burns up differently than a meteor. A meteor is basically a rock and comes apart in several chunks. The rocket burns up in thousands of pieces of sheet metal, bolts and other mechanical parts.

Re-entries of space junk probably occur a couple times every month around the world, Peterson said. Most go unseen because they're during daylight or over oceans or remote areas.

Thursday's event was widely witnessed because it came during the morning commute before sunlight and was just above the western horizon, tracking from north to south, Peterson said. Had it been overhead many would have missed it, according to him.

The more witnessed re-entries happen once every 3 or 4 years, Peterson said.

People can log on to www.cloudbait.com to report sightings of the space debris to scientists who will investigate further and create official reports.

  2. Are you an idiot? Seriously though, are you? Did you even read the article you posted? We didn't get attacked, the rocket was in space and came back down and was destroyed when it went through the atmosphere. A little piece landed in colorado.

  3. Shh, chill Motox.

Anyway, I live within eyeshot of NORAD. So I am in a first-strike zone.

    I always wanted to vaporize.

    :D

  4. Dont worry bout russins attcking us there too drunk off Absolute to bother plus there too busy playing R. roulette.

Speaking of ruolette we play a game in the hood called crack it where we wrap a said number of buds in rolling paper in a ball shape, then throw a crack rock in the mix the winner is the one thats not a crackhed at the end. (This also works with meth&PCP):D

  5. dude ur dumb........ not to urt your feeling did u even read what norad said dumbass and i we got att it wount be bad russia has less the 1k nukes now since the fall in 1991 and we would have herd are citys waring system

  6. you mean absolut? and Russias army is nuts. If I had to guess which country would be the best bet to kick the US's ass it'd be Russia

  7. .... what

  8. Yeah I give it too you Russia is pretty militant but there mostly srategy, now Germans is some scary motheuckers due to the whole hitler thing but there broke as fuck from paying war taxes.

  9. german army was crazy cuz they did so much tweak. give the russian army some tweak and theyre ready to kick some serious ass

  10. you dont have to be an asshole. you come off as extreamly over oppinionated.

anyway, nice thread, we didnt get attacked but who wouldnt be worried about missles lolly gaggin around the earth?

  11. ...I don't want to interrupt this accurate, serious and professional debate on military history. *ahem*SARCASM!*ahem*

But anyways, yeah, It sucks to know that I'll be covered in radioactive debris if NYC ever gets hit.

  12. I live here and I think our asses could be kicked by ANYONE with enough will power to do so. And by will power I mean ratio of population in contrast to the belief they are following.... More the people believe, regardless of numbers, determines how hard they fight...

Im saying a country the size of Germany, maybe even smaller, COULD do it... If we got seriously bombed or attacked, half the population would just go crazy to the point of insanity...

  13. Those who live in glass houses...

  14. some people definitely get excited to easily. i was merely joking when i posted this article, and that seemed to go way over the heads of a few individuals.

  15. the result: we get to see just how much people don't know about history as well as culture of other countries.

  16. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who picked up on that.

  17. WTF? Russia would be commiting national suicide by attacking America and its Allys.
