    I never notice the difference between smashing a pack of cigs and smashing a hamster with my shoe either.

    He didn't feeling like tearing up the whole carpet again, so he was trying to make it unnoticable.

    To me that didn't even look like a pack of cigs. And I'm sure he would have felt the difference ...
