Single Plant, inside Trash Can?

I was thinking I could grow a single plant inside a 50 gallon rubbermaid (or similar) trash can.

The interior would be painted a shiny white. I know aluminum foil creates hot spots with HID lighting; is that also a problem using CFLs? Seems like foil would reflect more light.

I would cut a hole in the lid for the exhaust fan, and light proof it with an elbow bend and insulated ducting.
The Intake will have a small fan. It will have flexible ducting that I can bend to point at the stem of the plant.

For the lighting I would use several CFLs, as high a wattage as I can find.

I was thinking I could drill a 4 inch grid of holes in the lid, and simply hang several CFLs from different holes (depending on where the plant needs them) and cover the holes up with black duct tape. This way I can move the lights around relatively easily by moving them to different holes and adjusting the length of the cable.

Is this enough space for a plant, if I have good airflow? Could I put two plants in there?

Any help is appreciated. If anyone has built/seen something similar a link would be great as well.

That's perfect! Exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. +++rep

^^^ Proof of concept. I made some changes to the design in my original post after reading about this "growpod".

Anyone else have advice? Links? Maybe even someone with experience building something similar?

  3. Would love to see some pix after you build yours! I may be doing the same here within the next couple days.
