Simple hydroponic system that I drew while high, opinions please

  1. Hello,
Total noob here, please tell me how to improve this design, pros/cons.
I want a system that is constantly running and not a flush and drain.
I will stop talking and keep this short and simple. Will this work?
    Here is the drawing.

  2. Ahhh, I think I am confusing fish for plants. The air stone should be right under the roots right? or do the roots absorb oxygen in the water?

  3. Yes the airstone(s) needs to be under the roots.

Keep in mind with your current set up that if you have a pump failure your solution is going to all drain back into your rez and onto the floor if it's not big enough.

  4. I think I should have the pump go up and then down, like an upside down U. Good point.

  5. If its always wet anyway why have an external res and pump? It looks like your trying to combine flood and drain with DWC, but you could accomplish the same task with less effort and chances of leaks with if you just stick with DWC.

  6. Your drawing of the proposed system will flood if your pump stops.
You do not need to have airstones under the roots (MJ is not a balloon).
As long as you have a well aerated recirculating soup, you are fine.
I suggest you add a chiller.

  7. I wanted to have multiple tables or grow boxes and a single external main res. Makes the job easier.
So there would be multiple containers like the one on the table.
Also it will keep water level constant on the net pot container until the res is depleted. If I have a single container then I have to refill every time the level of the solution drops.

  8. I built a similar setup and its a PITA to keep all the bucket levels the same, everything from leaking and the roots from blocking the drainage holes but if you do decide to try it I would keep your external res at the same level as the tables so if/when the pump stops all the water doesn't over flow your res.

  9. How would I set up a DWC where the container is refilled automatically whenever the water drops below a certain level? I want the system to run without me playing with it for a week at a time. (only daily inspection) not planning on getting my hands wet every day.
Went to pee and it a light bulb went in my head, I am thinking about setting a floater like the one in the toilet tank, when ever the water drops a gravity fed res will replenish with a 50% solution.
Good idea or do you have something better?
