Silent Exhuast?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Dread7Green, Nov 15, 2006.

  1. I purchased a 9" Oscillating fan just like this one but with the base and cover removed so it could be mounted on the wall of my grow box, with a carbon filter on the other side to reduce on smell.
    The fan: http://www.iallergy.com/images/med/honeywell-fan-ht800.jpg

My problem is the noise issue. It's not terribly loud but you can hear the "wind" coming out of the box where the fan is if you get what i'm saying. It's not the actuall fan itself making noise it's the air exiting the box, the blowing noise.

How can i minimize that noise? I've thought of slowing down the fan, but how do i go about doing that? I've tried wirring up a fan control dimmer switch with no luck.

    Thanks for any input

  2. The smaller the vent the louder the noise will be, like when you whistle. Smooth wide vents will create little noise. Or alternatively you could put some sort of mesh or loose grease filter over the vent to break up the air flow.

  3. heh sounds like a tornado doesn't it?

  4. Lol yes sort of..
Anyways the opening of the hole is the exact same size as the opening of the fan. Should it be wider yet?

I was also thinkin that if i could get a piece of flexible ducting (like they use for driers) 9" in diamter and run a 4' piece that might help silence it.What do you think?

I've seen mufflers and such but none are what i'm looking for.. maybe the problem is that the fan is not going thorugh any sort of vent or ducting, and is loud because it's just blowing through a hole in the wood with a carbon filter attached?

Do you think the flexible ducting idea might work ?
if so i'll go pick some up tonight.

Thanks for the help thus far.

  5. Or you could just get a proper duct fan, and use the oscillator for its intended purpose.

  6. i woud run ducting, for the exhaust, ith a duct fan of course, it thats too lound try wraping them in sleeping bags or somehting thats what i ended up doing. hope that helps.

  7. Your best best it to chuck the fan and get your self a "Hepa-filter". Those are silent as a mother and they are amazing at cleaing the air and making it smellless enviorment.

i use it for my allegires in the house.

  8. a hepa-filter won't make the grow area cooler.

  9. Well i didn't think i'd need to go out and buy one, they fan i bought was only 10 bux, and it sure as hell serves its purpose, the air is exchanged in that box quite well... The fan is silent, a ducting fan wouldn't matter as far as fan noise goes. However the ducting part would help, and i'm going out to buy some later tonight.

    Thanks for the input guys

  10. Well i've fixed the problem without having to buy anything. I had some scrape pieces of carpet with insulation backing so i cut a sqaure out and stapeled it over the fan opening, with a large crease in the middle, sort of like a wind tunnely thing. The air still flows great, but now it's virtually silent.

  11. Good work!

  12. thanks, and thanks for your help with other ideas too!

  13. just go to home depot and get a inline duct fan for 35

  14. Why? First off i have no duct work so that would prove pointless. Second i have no need what so ever for that fan, the fan i have now moves plenty of air. if you would have read the above posts you would have realized i that i fixed my problem, with the help of the others. My exhaust is now almost 100% silent, as the carpet tunnel i made absorbs most of the sound.

  15. well sorry for trying to be helplful

  16. Sorry that the tone of my post may have seemed a little offensive i did not mean for it to come off like that at all :).

I understand you were trying to be helpful, but i already figured out a solution.

    Thanks
