Sick: Young, Undercover Cops Flirted With Students to Trick Them Into Selling Pot

Working at the Drug Policy Alliance for the last twelve years I have read and heard countless stories of people having their lives ruined because of our country's cruel war on drugs. Last weekend, the nationally syndicated show This American Life highlighted a story that is so insane, you don't know whether to laugh or puke.

Last year in three high schools in Florida, several undercover police officers posed as students. The undercover cops went to classes, became Facebook friends and flirted with the other students. One 18-year-old honor student named Justin fell in love with an attractive 25-year-old undercover cop after spending weeks sharing stories about their lives, texting and flirting with each other.

One day she asked Justin if he smoked pot. Even though he didn't smoke marijuana, the love-struck teen promised to help find some for her. Every couple of days she would text him asking if he had the marijuana. Finally, Justin was able to get it to her. She tried to give him $25 for the marijuana and he said he didn't want the money -- he got it for her as a present.

A short while later, the police did a big sweep and arrest 31 students -- including Justin. Almost all were charged with selling a small amount of marijuana to the undercover cops. Now Justin has a felony hanging over his head.

This story is not unique to Florida and it reminds me of an [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek0fZExTqQ8[/ame]
A young man from Great Barrington, Mass., who served two years in jail for selling a joint to an undercover cop. The officer befriended Lawrence and his friends and would hang out with them. One day the cop asked if Lawrence had any weed. Lawrence gave the cop a joint. The cop handed him $20. Lawrence hesitated, but the cop insisted on giving him the money. "Selling" the joint, because they were hanging out less than a 1000 feet from a school, and thus was considered a "drug free school zone," carried a mandatory minimum two-year sentence.

The drug war is sick. How much money was wasted by our law enforcement to get these few bags of marijuana "off the streets"? How do these cops look themselves in the mirror? Seducing 18-year-olds to fall in love or pretending to be friends and then tricking them into procuring small amounts of marijuana so they can charge them with felonies is beyond slimy and diametrically opposed to the officers' charge to "serve and protect."
We often hear that we need to fight the drug war to protect the kids. As these despicable examples show, more often the drug war is ruining young people's lives and doing more harm than good.

HOLY shit if I was that Mitchell Lawrence kid that got two years for giving the guy a joint, I would do some terrible things to that cop when I got out of jail.

  2. Like I said 10-15 more years America will be number 1# again. When all these old fuks are dead and gone and the smart weed smokers go into office. We own this world and soon to be proved right.

  3. This is just sick, I honestly don't know, can't even imagine, how those pigs look in the mirror each morning.

    Poor kids.

  4. How was that not entrapment? The kid didn't smoke, but the cop asked for it. What. The. Fuck.

  5. that's crazy as hell.

I heard about a story about some dude falling in love with some chick, they have a kid, get married. The girl starts getting into dealing weight gets her husband involved than busts him and puts up the kid for the adaption. She was an undercover...

Not sure how legitimate that story is.

  6. reddit bro?

  7. I swear I smoked weed with an undercover one time. Theres no way that guy wasn't a cop

  8. Cops, nothing better to do then bust some horny high schoolers with pot.

  9. Fucking sick man

  10. Sad, thats why i like weed where i live its really strict and that keeps me on my toes about who i associate with about the herb.

  11. i guess its not due to the fact that he made a choice to go out and find some, and give it to the cop. he could have said no, but this story is fucking crazy. im losing faith in our authority figures, even though there are still good cops out there.

  12. Stop giving cops the benefit of courtesy.

Cops don't give stoners ANY, why the fuck are we?

  13. damn that's messed on a real note if the dude fell in love with the bitch(she qualifies as a bitch in this situation)

  14. Wow, that's beyond fucked up. Just makes me sick...

  15. God fucking damn. I hate cops. I have a very good cop friend though. He is actually very very cool.

  16. This is so fucking moronic words can't even explain, cops pressure kids to stay in school, and if that woman cop had ANY smarts at all she'd know that, that kid has never smoked pot a day in his life. I mean c'mon a 4.0 student? She was the one who was harassing the poor fucking kid, Jesus Christ I mean if I was that boy i'd take her ass to fucking court. HOLYFUCK this makes me rage.

  17. You know that big vain on your temple that bulges out when you get pissed? What do you do when it bursts out of your head?

  18. Fuck the police!

  19. What really fucking pisses me off about this is that those cops used thousands and thousands of taxpayer dollars part of which is paying some bitch to flirt with a high school kid so they can bust him for selling 20 bucks of weed when he didn't even smoke wow.

Only good thing is now they gave us some great facts to spread about how stupid America's drug war is and I'm even more motivated to fight for our right to choose if we want to smoke or not. Fuck the stupid ignorant ass cops out there. (yes there are good cops, not many, but some)
