Should I recommend my dad weed for his chronic pain?

Discussion in 'Medical Cannabis: Treatments & Patient Experiences' started by Dottumblrdotcom, Aug 24, 2012.

  1. Hey, my dad is in his late 40s. Anyways, he's had a ton of surgeries, some for his elbow, back, and shoulder. In fact, on his shoulder the thing they did for it ended up failing, and so they did it again. Guess what? It failed again (long time ago; he's just been suffering with it for years now). Also, he's had a back surgery in which they placed screws in his back. Shortly after his recovery, he got rear-ended and it broke one of the screws. Together, these give him terrible chronic pain. He told me recently about how he took many different types of pain killers, but most of them made him itchy or something like that. He also takes a ton of ibuprofen every day for the soreness. He takes so much that it caused him to be rejected a health insurance coverage (because they did a liver test or something like that).
I'm thinking about recommending medical marijuana for him. I'm nervous about this because he recently caught me with weed, and I still live in his house. I don't want him to think I'll take his weed if he does consider getting medical marijuana. Also, he takes Wellbutrin. I'm not sure if that could have a negative effect on smoking weed. Should I tell him to look into medical marijuana? We live in Michigan, so I'd first want to find out if his boss would fire him if he took weed legally (I hear that people can get fired if they test positive for weed, whether it's medicinal or not).
I don't want my dad to go on with this pain, and I'm mainly concerned about his health because he takes ibuprofen like crazy, and he also recently found out he had stage 2 hypertension. I don't have any ulterior motive about this, but I guess if he learned the medicinal benefits of weed, he wouldn't mind me smoking so much.
How could I go about talking to my dad about looking medical marijuana?
    Please help

  2. give him a blunt saying its a cigar

  3. No. He quit smoking tobacco for his back surgery in 2003.
Also, he has smoked weed a bunch in the 70's. He said that his big brother made him do it so he couldn't snitch on him. My dad said that "[he] smoked so much weed in 9th grade that it made [him] dumb as fuck"
I'd like some better information other than drugging him.

  4. Hon, I collect medical studies- lots of them! See that first link in my sig? CLICK IT!

That will take you to the small GC version of my List. It will give you the medical studies and articles you need to show your Dad. You can grab stuff like-

Or you can just click the link and call Dad over saying- "Just read the titles". ;)

Even better, send me an email and I will send you back a 840 page PDF of links to show Dad. (No way of him peeking in at GC and seeing what you've been up to! lol)

My brother takes Welbutrin and smokes pot with no problems. :)

Get your Dad off the ibuprofen! It can kill him! The fact the insurance company rejected him after a liver test is a BIG "red flag"!

  5. Bake him a special brownie then.

  6. I'll have to second the warning about ibuprofen. My brother-in-law was on a prescription dose of it for years for chronic pain due to a shattered ankle and was recently diagnosed with stage 3 chronic kidney disease. The Nephrologist (kidney specialist)says it's due to his past use of ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen may be safe for occasional use, but apparently not so much if you need to use it every day for several years.

This is what all parents say when they find out u smoke. Then they find out u smoke way better shit and a lot more than them they will stop saying that.

  8. Okay, I'll tell him about it in about a week or two. Right now he's going through another one of his disrespectful-asshole phase. Seriously. If you ever meet him, never get close to him or else he'll find your weaknesses and mock them and he'll find out every sensitive topic about your life and walk all over it. Hell, if he wasn't so much of a dick, I probably would be one of those sheltered anti-pot people.
Back on topic though. Could he risk his job if he legally smoked medicinal marijuana? I don't think they drug test (except for when they hired him) but I'd rather not risk his job. I figure if he considered the idea, I would tell him to ask his boss if getting a medical marijuana card and smoking weed in the afternoon would get him fired. There isn't a chance that by simply asking, he could risk losing his job, right? Oh, and I hope he ends up smoking. He'll be soooooo chill.

  9. Even in many medical states, yes you can get fired whether you're a legal patient or not.

And technically, even if he smoked the night before, he would test positive for a couple days. That means even if he kept it completely seperate from work, some sort of accident at work that requires a drug test would mean he's fired.

I just read about this on another forum about a medical patient in CA got fired for having soem boxes fall on him. He never toked during work, just after hours and was completely sober at the job.

If he chooses MMJ that also affects driving, as getting pulled over and admitting to use within the past couple days will lead to a positive drug test and possibly DWI.

  10. That's fucked up bro. The government makes it legal medically, but then takes away your rights for using it. Total bs. Do you know about Michigan? I know that one worker guy at the warehouse (my dad's a salesman for them) got crippled from machinery and my dad said his boss is having the guy drug tested because he thinks he smoked pot (this is to avoid having to pay the guy for his injuries caused at work).

  11. Not 100% sure on the laws in MI

    heres teh thread...

I'm guessing its pretty similar to CA.

Do your research before considering it. Chances are your dad is pretty hard-headed and may not consider it.

Watching documentaries like "the union" may help your dads views on the subject, but it all dpends on what his perception of MJ is really like.

The whole idea that he smoked so much it made his dumb as fuck may not help you convicing him if already has that train of thought

  12. One thing my dad is notorious for is how stubborn is-ask his brothers, ex-wife, step-daughter, or mother :D.
I think he still may try it because it will help out with his pain and he could just smoke a little, right? How much would one smoke to deal with chronic pain? When I smoke I try to get as high as possible before my throat gives out (I usually have to quit at about .5 grams) but I guess pain is tolerable after a bowl or two?

  13. I wouldn't even have him smoke, get a quality vaporizer (about $150) and have him use that.

I'm sure you know yourself, but once the buzz dies off, the pain will be back. Chances are he'll need to toke several times a day to keep the pain away if its as bad as you say

  14. I'd make sure he took his RX pain med first, after bout an hour(itching is 100% normal due to histamine release) have a nice smoke with him. Dont get him completley fucked out of his mind, but let him take a good 10 hits or so.
The RX pain meds should keep him from experiencing any anxiety from the weed while adding to t he analgesic properties.
Good luck, don't drug the poor guy though..
