should i buy gallons or quarts?

  1. Hey DC,

Being fairly new at growing myself one of the early lessons I've learned is that, having more than enough supplies is much better than too little. The nutrients are not going to go bad, so spending some extra money up front may save you money overall. You'll avoid buying a second supply for this crop, and have nutrients left over for your next crop by buying in bulk. Keeping that thought in mind makes it much easier to part with the extra money up front:D

    Have a good one,

  2. that would be my plan, but im a little tight on money at the moment, i was thinking i'll just buy that and later in the season i'll probably have more money so i'll just get more. any idea on how long that would last?

  3. Hey DC,

I feel ya on the money issue. Unfortunately I'm not nearly experienced enough to give you a credible answer. I've felt my way through three indoor hydro grow cycles (so an indoor novice at best) and I'm having my own issues getting my first outdoor grow ready...

However, I'm sure someone with experience will be by shortly to help out. I do know they'll probably want to hear some details about your plans in order to make a guesstimate though. Climate, strain, setup, etc. It may help to post that info and avoid those inevitable questions.... Best of luck.

  4. ite well, im in pennsylvania and im planting on 420. about 10 plants in 3 or 5 gallon pots. my spot will probably end up being in a woods type area. tell me if you need anymore info.

  5. I had 13 plants last year. I bought 1 gallon and 2 qts of Grow Big which was perfect. And I bought 1 gallon and 1 qt of Tiger Bloom which I had a little left over but not much and same with the Big Bloom (1gal and 1 qt with a little bit left over). Get it by the gallon because it gets anoyying in mid July to have to go get more nutrients. Also I found that I needed a qt of Botanicare Cal-Mag+. All this was done with a 50/50 mix of FFOF and FF Happy Frog (5-5-5) in 10 gallon buckets and 18 gallon buckets. You can see my grow in my sig. Also invest in FF "Don't Bug Me" organic spray, its worth its weight in gold! I bought 3 qts of it and used them all. I used 1 qt going through the proximity of my grow and killing off 'pillar nests and I used the other 2 qts gradually over the grow season as I saw damage. Use it either early in the morning before the sun rises or at dusk as the sun is setting...if your in an area that stays moist or gets a decent amount of rain use large coffee cans with the bottoms cut out to surround your plants stalk to keep slugs off.

  6. Planting on 420 :-/ Save that for a smoke celebration, and plan on planting during the first week of May. If the weather gets down into the 40s or lower (which is a possibility) at night while they are still sprouting they will get stunted or die...niether is a great outcome. The plants will out grow those 3-5 gallon buckets in the 4-6 weeks outddors...go to Wally World and get larger 10 gallon tote buckets I have pics in my journal of them somewhere but the 10-gallon ones cost me $8 each I believe.

PS: If your intent on planting on 420 get gallon milk jugs and cut the bottoms off and once the seeds are sprouting in the soil put the milk jug over top of it and place soil up the side of the jug about 3" to keep the wind from knocking it off or tie it to the edge of the buckets. Place the jugs over the plant an hour before dark and plance the caps on...this will help retain more heat to help them get through any questionable nuights/days.

Also look into natural methods of keeping the ground warmer...
sand heats up quickly but loses heat quickly, clay takes a bit to heat up but will slowly release through out the night and black rocks or dark coloured rocks will radiate off heat absorbed during the day to the soil and the immediate surrounding area...a mixture of sand and clay with your soil of choice wouldn't be a bad idea...5% clay 10-15% sand and the rest soil all mixed together wel (evenly).

  7. on second thought maybe i will plant later. but if i plant in the first week of may could i still use that jug trick so the wind doesnt knock it down?

  8. You could but the wind helps build the stalks up stronger. If they look too lanky and start to fall bring the soil level up to around a cm under the first leaf set (just make sure the soil isn't touching the leaves cause it will rot them out). And soon they will start to get stalks strong enough to withstand strong head winds...my last grow had most days of the week with 5mph winds and some times in the 20-30mph range without issues.

  9. Get the gal versions, way cheaper and you could always use extra on w/e afterwards. The Quarts are so overpriced

  10. yeah thats my problem i dont have $120 to spend on a gallon of nutrients atm so i figure ill just get the quarts and buy more later

  11. Well you have a month to "fund raise" to get enough to buy the nutrients ;) before its warm enough to put these babies outdoors.

  12. true true.
