Shorter, Wider Plants

  1. So I have read the archives about pruning. I am working with a space thats about 4 ft length and 4 ft width. However, it is only 3 feet high. If i prune the tops of my plants, does this encourage the plant to grow wider or does it just make the plant have more branches to grow upward??? How soon can you start to prune - from the start of branch growth or do you have to give the plant some time to gain a little strength??? Thanks for the replies.

  2. Don't do any topping until the nodes become alternate on the mainstem,,then leave 2 nodes of alternate on the plant, remove those that may be above that point. The plant will divert the energy to the other branches, and yes, they will try to be mainstems, and grow longer,,when you see they are again growing from the tips,,top each tip..as it grows you may have to prune wild ones.....think Bansai
