Several Homemade Pest Repelants 101 (*Organic*)

Discussion in 'Plant Problems: Pests, Disease & Deficiencies' started by h4rk4t, Aug 16, 2006.

  1. Okay. So over the years I have learnt adopted many techniques on homemade repelants from expierementing and word of mouth.
    Here they are:

    Cup of dear Repelant

Ask your local barber shop for some human hair, or just keep some from your own head that is at leastt a hand full. What i do is just go and ask my barbour for a bag or two of hair. Next just wrap a fistfull of human hair into a square/ball of nylon netting and tie it into a bundle with string so that it doesnt fall out.
To protect the hair from rain which removes the scent, poke a hole in the bottom of a 12 ounce plastic foam cup. You then place the bundle in the cup, then pull the string through the hole, and tie it into a loop. A fellow farmer friend of mine does this and he is the one who gave me the idea, he hangs one cup per tree (not weed trees heh) and replaces the cup each year. He sasys this tricks deer for about 3 years before they catch on....but its not like its going to be the same deer for 3 years.
Another thing that could help add to this is dog hair, since one of their predators is the canine (wolf).

    Slug Discouragement (2 solutions)

FINALLY! an inexpensive way to discourage snails/slugs. I take a bag or bucket of builder's sand to the patch. I use an old laundry scoop to distribute sand around the base of each plant. Slugs won't crawl over the SHARP sand.

Andother way to discourage slugs is to sprinkle red cedar shavings (the kind used for hamster litter!!!) around your plants. According to a teacher/gardener i know "they hate crawling over the cedar, thankyou!".

    Dreadfull Cutworms

    There are THREE techniques here:

First get a 5 and a half ounce cat food can. Wash it thoroughly, cut bottoms off, and remove the labels. Place them over plants (when their young enough so it can fit over all of it) and press them into the ground to stop cut worms from chewing off tender plants.

Second way which i find easyer is to just simply grab some Aluminum Foil.
Just cut a piece of aluminum foil about 6 inches square and then crumple it slightly. JUST until it feels rough to the touch. Then tear the foil from the middle of one side to the center of the square. Slip the plants stem through that opening and pinch the foil closed around the stem, forming something like a mini-tree guard. You just have to make sure the foil covers the stem and reaches down into the soil just a little bit.

Get a cleer plastic 12-to 16-ounce water or soda bottle. This is also a great cutworm barrier. Slice plastic bottles into 3-inch-high rings, then press into soil about 1 inch newly planted seedlings and whatnot. They make a very effective cutworm barrier, AND they dont show from a distance :).

    Japanese Beatles

For short term control, hand-picking is the safest and most effective way. To make the job easier, place cans of vinegar solution (equal parts apple cider vinegar and water) next to the vulnerable plants. Early and late in the day when beetles are sluggish, hold the can under the beetles and knock them into the vinegar solution. Vinegar kills them quickly. Leave the can in place untill it's full, and then empty the dead bugs into a compost pile if you make compost, they help lots, and refill the cans.

    BIRDS!

Blackbirds (and other kinds, these are just the kinds in my area) love to snatch up my seeds as soon as I plant them! My girlfriend likes blackbirds, and I like my weed seeds....so I couldnt shoot them, so i turned to an old family trick that suddenly sparked in my head from when i was a child. After i plant/water the rows/individual plant, i lay 2x4's or any other scrap boards i have around over the seeds. I lift the boards after a few days to check wether they'v broken ground, to check weather the seeds are sprouting. When i see they've broken ground, i take off the boards. The seedlings green up in just a day or two, so dont worry if they look white. Once they sprout its up to you, place a little fence over them, or just shoot them, cause the more birds u shoot in an area, the less want to come because they know its dangerous.

NOT ONLY does hiding seeds under a board help, but the other advantage is the board keeps the soil nice and moist around the seeds, so my patch sprouts days faster than uncovered rows. And I don't have to water in the meantime.

    Bugs/Pest's Pesticide Spray Recipe

    1 quart water
    3 ounces strong onion, peeled
    2 ounces fresh garlic
    2 tobacco cigarettes (remove
    paper)
    1/8 teaspoon dish washing
    detergent
    4 ounces denatured alcohol
    2 tablespoons buttermilk
    1 Teaspoon Dr. Bronners
    Peppermint soap

The onion, garlic tobacco and water
are mixed in a blender until liquefied.
Then the mash is cooked until
simmering. It is cooled to luke warm.
Then the soap, detergent, alcohol and
buttermilk are added. The liquid is
poured through a fine mesh strainer.
The plants are sprayed or dipped. Most
of the pests hang around the underside
of the leaves. Special care is taken to
reach these sections. The spray is
used every two or three days. Keep
out of the reach of children and pets
as the nicotine leached from the
    tobacco is highly toxic.

    END

I will try and update this.
    Happy growing.
    Goodluck

  2. Great thread!

  3. agreed:D

  4. Great post.

I have Spydermite control solution from a company very well known for making products of MJ plants.

When you smell the stuff it most DEFINATELY has LOTS of tobacco juice in it, so i dont think adding tobacco juice to the mixtures above will do anything to your plants, hasnt affected mine what so ever.

  5. PS watched the Jesus short film :) interesting lol
