Serious Question after Serotonin Syndrome

Discussion in 'Beginner Cannabis Consumption & Tips' started by Michaelisanowl, Jan 6, 2011.

  1. Hi all,
Recently I've been having some serious problems that I haven't been able to find any answers to on the net. I've smoked bud for over a year now, and have never had any problems whatsoever. It's been a huge cure to most of my anxiety/depression problems. It even regulated my weight after heavy use (which surprised me, because at first I gained weight).

Anyways, through the past year I've experimented with other drugs, including amphetamines. About two weeks ago I was taking Adderall XR to stay awake, and a week ago I took an SSRI called Lexapro. I know this was dumb, but at the time I didn't realize the adverse interaction that could occur. And it did.

If you guys don't know, this causes a potentially life threatening condition called Serotonin Syndrome/Serotonin Toxicity. I had a fever, tremors, hot flashes, delirium, muscle twitches, etc. It was probably the most horrible experience of my life, and from the moment I stopped shitting blood and having back to back panic attacks, I vowed to never take pharmaceuticals recreationally again. Luckily, I didn't have to go to the ER, as my reaction wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been.

    ANYWAYS.
This was almost a week ago, and my symptoms have come down substantially. I feel pretty normal now, but last night I tried to toke down, and for the first time, I experienced a severe anxiety attack, a hot flash, and difficulty breathing until I came down. It was odd, because I could feel the effects of being high, except on an uncomfortable level. (Mind you, this was only after 1 or 2 tokes). This scared me to death, and after trying again this morning with the same anxiety effects, I'm afraid I'll never be able to toke in peace again.

Is my brain perma fucked from that one bad reaction?
I've done plenty of serotonin affecting drugs before, and I've never had this type of experience. I come to you guys with this question, because I cannot find any information online about it.

You guys are my last resort, as I really do NOT want to have to give up my favorite medicine :/

    Please help/reply,
    Michael.

  2. take a month long t break to be safe man don't want to trash your brain chemistry

  3. I hate to be the bearer of bad news man, but its time to make a change. All in all, I see abusing medication as a really fucked up thing to do, as you never know what's going to happen. Stay sober for a while, and see if the symptoms return while sober. Start smoking again and if it happens again, you might just have to stop. I REALLY suggest you keep away from meds for highs, it just generally is a bad idea (as you have learned). Keep it straight man, and if it gets too bad go to a doctor, as much as it would suck. Death isnt worth a high (unless its weed :D, which won't kill you).

  4. Anxiety attack have to be dealt with in the head, you have to stop an assess the situation.
What we're you thinking prior of the anxiety setting in? i would like to hear :)

  5. Before the anxiety set in, I was thinking nothing but great thoughts. Like.."sweet. about to get high as balls, and listen to some great music"
But within minutes, I started to have hot flashes, and my high went downhill from there. I had the general mind change, but my body was twitchy, and I was generally uncomfortable.

And yeah, I've actually decided to go clean for a month and see how it goes. Thanks for the feedback :)

  6. good luck man post back when you're off your break

You need to stop taking ALL DRUGS COMPLETELY.

Clean your body, rid itself of ALL OF THE TOXINS.
Exercise, eat healthy, drink lots of water, take vitamins and drink plenty of fruit juice, also eat fruit if you like it.

After a month, you should/will be fine... until then you will most probably experience bad anxiety and most likely panic attacks.

    never touch SSRI's again unless prescribed;
Don't even smoke weed until your body is clean, this will take a minimum of 1 month, but give yourself 2 to just be sure... even though it's basically harmless, it's still a mind altering substance; give your body, mind and brain its rest and time to repair...

Most importantly, don't give up and give in to "one more use"; your mind will be PERMANENTLY FUCKED

    Good luck brother,

    peace&love

  8. No problem:D

hm..hot flashes you say? well ..hot flashes are a symptom of the changing hormone levels so,either your a mid age women with menopause,or you don't exercise enough, lack of exercise lowers testosterone in men,so it be in your best interest that you go for daily walks, for your health.:smoke:

  9. Thanks guys, I'll check back in after my detox.
And I'm a 19 year old male with an extreme lack of exercise, but I've never had a hot flash until the overdose, and those few tokes.

I really appreciate the comments, I'll be back.

hahah remember ,no pain no gain :p:D GOOD LUCK!

and eating healthy is also a key essential step in optimal health, like what hiimhi said :D

  11. meds made by man are not something to fuck with

  12. I definitely feel you. This experience pretty much changed my life.
Btw hit up "Run from the Cure" by Rick Simpson on youtube. Serious stuff.

  13. SSRIs produce long-term changes in brain chemistry. Not permanent, but long-term. Do a full detox--herb, pills, caffeine, EVERYTHING--for a few months. It's a good time to learn some nonchemical means of anxiety management, like meditation and exercise. Moreover, those skills will help you should you ever get the weed paranoia some smokers get.

  14. Is there anywhere I can find information on the post effects of Serotoin Syndrome? I'm going to several doctors in the next couple weeks for full body check ups to see if there's any damage.
I've searched everywhere online, but I can't find any info on the after effects of SS.

I've taken Lexapro and Adderall on the same day and I didn't die or get sick but I don't recommend continuing this habit. Adderall is for suckers.

If you want to stay awake utilize Caffeine its better than Adderall. Adderall will keep you awake but your body will feel like shit. Stay natural.

    Trust me I know.

    ---

Let me just explain what happened to you.

You take the Lexapro like you always do.
    Then you take the Adderall.

Then you smoke some weed, look up that Lexapro and Adderall do not combine well.

Then you freak the fuck out and think the whole world is collapsing.

Then you have a full fledged panic attack you fall asleep and wake up and don't really know whether you really did OD or you were just too high to think straight.

Also let me just describe to you what Serotonin syndrome actually is.

Serotonin syndrome is essentially a toxic percentage of serotonin in your brain.

First you would start to get really agitated (almost like a panic attack)

Then you would start to get really hot and really reactive. Your temperature could reach about 104 Fahrenheit which basically means you feel like you have the flu or something. It fact it can be mistake for a viral illness.

The reality is in order to die from Serotonin syndrome you would have to either ingest an excessive amount of a strong SSRI like 'E' or you would have to take 2 counter acting medications in excess specifically SSRI's and MAOI's in combination. Otherwise, you would notice after taking two antagonistic medications after quite some time it would seem.

    You are fine.

The reason you're having panic attacks is essentially because you don't smoke often enough. I could explain the science but I'm not going to bother.

  17. this^ right here.

get your body back bro you only have one.

  18. No, no no no no.
    You got it all wrong.
I DID experience Serotonin Syndrome. I had a fever that rose and dropped over the course of 48 hours, and I had tremors for I don't know how long. I took 40mg of Lexapro a week AFTER I had been taking Adderall and Vyvanse daily to stay awake. I didn't smoke weed until 3 days after my SS experience, and all my SS symptoms started coming back. Muscle twitches, agitation, general anxiety.

And I smoked every day for over a year. I built up a pretty strong tolerance.

  19. Guys you don't need to ho the guy for getting high off meds, he obviously learned his lesson. My suggestion is to just stay sober for a while, you'll eventually feel like smoking again and when that comes you'll know it.

Also, were you smoking alone or by yourself? I'm not going to explain my situation but I was in a similar one and when I smoked socially I didn't get panic attacks or any of that.

  20. Well guys, since the experience I've taken benzos to control my agitation/twitches, but I've toked very very rarely. Over time, each smoke was less anxious, and more relaxed, how bud usually made me feel. I went a few days without it at one point, and yesterday I smoked a blunt with my brotato. I felt amazing. I'm very glad to say my brain must be chemically balanced again. Thanks for all the comments and support :D
