Seedlings under 400w hps

  1. Has anyone went from a 150w cfl to a 400w hps? On a young seedling, I don't want to kill them haha and my t5 won't be here for a few more days.

  2. Just keep using the cfl until the T5 gets there - keep it about 2 inches away and it should be fine. If you do use the hps just keep it like a foot or 2 away and use a small fan and keep temps in line and you should be good.

  3. Temps are not a problem I'll still have to bring my seedling mat into my tent it is around 60 with my lights on that's why their in the house but they are stretching to much

  4. I have 4 day old seedlings under a 400w. I wouldn't worry, just don't start them too close.

  5. Screw cfls, as long as your heat is under control they will be fine

  6. Ok I thought it would be fine just making sure, better safe than sorry

  7. I was wondering kinda of the same question. I got 7 plants under 3 hps lights and I want to take some clones but don't want to have to buy another light just for my clone to be under for a week. So it is safe to use the hps just have it father away? And keep heat under control?

What size hps? I think it will be fine, provided heat is under control. However, if using a tray and dome for clones, the dome is going act as a mini greenhouse capturing heat. That would be my main concern.

While hid lighting is powerful you have to take in to effect the law of inverse square. Due to exponential lumen loss over distance from the light source, a 400w hps at 24" away puts out about as much light as about 3 23w cfls. If your plants die and and they are only getting about 5k lumens then too much light isn't the problem. It is just an easy thing to blame.

  9. 3 lights total 2-400w hps/mh 1-1000w hps. I wouldn't use all three just for clones that'd be overkill. Im currently 2-1/2 weeks into flowering with 7 gorgeous girls. Just making plans for the next grow. Nice to kno I won't be having to invest in another light just for cloning if I don't have to.

  10. I have seen people put 1000W on just one plant and know plenty who do. Just make sure it is well over a foot above it and air is moving good in there and you should be fine. The heat will kill it before the watts.
