Sea of Green Method - From Seed???

Discussion in 'Advanced Growing Techniques' started by Corkwheats, Sep 15, 2020.

  1. Hi Guys,
So, from the way I understood it, to do the SOG grow, it was necessary to use clones from a MATURE Mother Plant (not from seed, etc.).
Are people just taking any small plant and putting it into flower real early?
    Thanks

  2. I have seen both from seed or clone. The big difference is cost hint's why most are done from clone.

  3. Oh and yes taking very young plants in 1-2 gallon pots. We call it a quick flip.

  4. I've done it both ways and end results are fine as always. I noticed clones are quicker to finish, or at least seems that way. It depends on what you are looking to do.

  5. Clones finish 15-25% faster in my experience.

  6. Seedlings need a month or two (depending on genetics) just to be sexually mature, before that they wont flower. Clones are mature (assuming taken from mature mother) and will go into flower as soon as lights are flipped.

  7. Thanks Scooby, and all you guys!
Funny thing - after I posted this yesterday, and had NO IDEA......
I went out to my (temporary) outside grow - I have some young plants, in 2 gallon pots, approx. 1' tall of several strains.
So.......I'm walking along, and all my G.G. plants are budding! (The others don't appear to be yet).
Up here in the Upper Midwest, the days are quickly getting shorter, so these puppies are doing their thing!
So, speaking of Sea of Green.....it's getting started faster than I thought!

  8. Also with clones you can get a more uniform canopy which is very important.

    Thanks Guys.
I realize that many times we “shoot for” perfection and in a perfect world, if I had unlimited $ I would, too.
But, this is a heckuva “economy” grow, and unfortunately will also be labor intensive.
I’m hoping to get to where I have the uniform plant size, scrog netting, auto watering, etc.
But, as for now, my Sea of Green grow will have a bunch of 2 gallon pots all together, with bamboo stakes holding the plants up, and a couple blurple lights above them. I’ll see how it goes, and try to improve with each successive grow.
One question I had in regard to uniform plant size........ If there are some that are a tiny bit taller, would I want them on the outside of the light perimeter or the inside?

  10. Moving them to the side will just make the plant stretch more and also greatly affect the growth and yield of quality bud from that plant.

also raising the light will just make everything worse and overall yield/quality of ALL plants will suffer.

If your early in flowering I would snip off the main stem so that it’s not taller anymore. This part takes a little experience to judge where to cut. But basically you want to top the plant so the next node/branches are lower then the current canopy. Once you top it the side branches will grow quickly and if done right catch up to the rest of the canopy. This sacrifices your nice big main cola but shouldn’t decrease yield too much because the side colas should catch up.

if your pretty late into flowering and your colas are pretty set and you’ve trimmed your lower pop corn buds then high stress train the main stem/cola to even out canopy.

also consider for future sea of green setups to lollipop and increase density. So instead of say six two gallon pots with 4-6 colas you have 12 or even 18x 2-liter bottles with lollipopped single cola plants. You will get 12-18 nice well developed main colas with little to no pop corn.

however using 2liter containers will limit your growing style and time as once it gets too root bound the plant will suffer. This is where cloning comes into play.

learn to clone!! It’s super easy and will make a significant difference in your SoG.

  11. Thanks so much for the quality info! Sounds like you’ve done this before! Yes - In the future, I will be doing 100% clones - trying to keep them all uniform size. I have 2 Mother Plants (same strain) that I’ll be getting them from.

    Thanks,
    Bob

  12. No prob. And yes I’ve run SoG for a good 3years before I moved on. But we would fit about 45-50 plants in a 4x4 flood and drain tray. We had 3x 600w hps covering 2 trays. Used 6inx6inx6in pots with hydroton.
