Scouting out components of my first indoor grow;

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Chief of Kief, Sep 2, 2012.

  1. I've been browsing an awful lot lately for the right tools/nutes/lights/etc for my debut indoor grow. No nonsense, aiming to do it correctly and get as close to (or even surpass, if feasible) 1g/watt.

    As for nutes, the "ph perfect" Advanced Nutrients series has caught my eye, as I'm not going to always be able to manage my pH levels.

    Lighting-wise, I'm leaning towards 3x600w hps for my 8x4 flowering tent I intend on purchasing. I've also been interested in LED due to the lower temps and energy consumption. I'm uneducated in terms of how much area they cover vs HPS. What LED setup would one best use for an 8x4 area?

    Also planning on using an HID/LED grow tent/box (assuming I need no odor control for veg) , but have no idea what veg room size to use to correspond with an 8x4 flower room. Also, again, if any LED setup in the veg room would outperform the HIDs, let me know.

    As for medium, hydroponics of some sort, open to the different techniques. Plant count undecided, whatever has been shown to give max yield. I'm looking to grow grade A bud; enough of it to supply myself and make me some good cashflow.

    Any tips/knowledge to further help push me along my way is appreciated; this is basically a dream of mine and I want it to be as exciting and optimal as possible right from the get-go.

    Thanks

  2. Not to rain on your parade, but I think you are getting way ahead of yourself and have far too lofty expectations for your first ever grow.....small and simple is much better to learn with, not a larger scale, multiple light grow like you are describing. Most experienced growers never achieve 1g/watt, so you will not be achieving this on your first ever grow. A gram per watt is generally regarded as perfection and is achieved through years of dialing in a grow setup and working with the same strain. No one achieves this on the first try.

    You have obviously done some research and I admire the enthusiasm, but my best advice is to go small and as simple as absolutely possible on your first go: one light, minimal mechanization, NOT hydro, simple nutrient schedule, etc. learn all you can and spend lots of time in your grow area. Do not set absurd goals like 1+g/watt and instead focus on the process and learn all you can....be happy if you get to harvest some decent smoke (ie. any at all) on your first try as many first time growers don't. I adhered to the KISS (keep it simple stupid) approach for my first grow and was glad I did......more variables = more things to control/monitor and more things to go wrong.

    Baby steps :)

  3. And from rereading your post you allude to selling your crop as a money making venture.....that kind of talk is discouraged here due for legal reasons as well as the fact that most of us are here to become self-sustaining so that we can avoid dealing with cash-croppers. If you want help from people on the forums, I'd keep your intentions to yourself.

  4. Ive had strains stink worse in veg then they did durring flowering
