Science doesn't boil down to common sense. In fact, many scientific truths are down right contrary to "common sense" which is perhaps why they're common. Second, we are not in the most volatile state we have ever been. Ever heard of the Cold War? Ever heard of the two World Wars? I love how people completely blow the current state completely out of proportion. Please give me some examples of scientific knowledge you find excessive. There's a reason why many of you are not scientists or doctors and would rather live a simple life and "look within" (or, in other words, sit cross legged and close your eyes) ... and that is simply because you are not amazed or excited about the natural world around us. How proteins and enzymes can do such a complex variety of functions or how DNA regulates and fixes itself. How all this came to be. How diverse the natural world is and yet how similar all creatures are. As for the universe and the galaxy, to know if it really does go on forever, to know what it's like to one day inhabit another planet, etc. etc. the list goes on. There are many smart people who really love science for knowledge sake. What I don't understand about this thread is how people who don't really CARE for science to begin with can start making comments about how science is empty or useless. Hell, tennis is useless too, but hey some people like to play and I don't hear many people talking about how tennis is useless. Yes, there's A LOT OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE... go on pubmed or hell open a 1000 page molecular bio textbook and you'll see, but WHAT IS YOUR POINT????
im surprised that this broad typed one of the more intelligent response to this thread. Just a method and nothing more. I don't understand what this fuss is about. Science is too complex. There's too much information. Then don't do science! Go to work. Make money. Smoke weed. Watch TV. Go to sleep.
I have a feeling most people refrained from entering this debate, as it is only going to descend into a bottomless argument about intangible concepts that amount to nothing.
I agree entirely. I find science beautiful for these reason, but ignoring your opinions of science, it is simply an attempt for man to understand physical phenomena - it is only what is on the surface - anything else is your perception of it. You and I might find science beautiful and another might find it horrifying and inhumane, but that's just because of our own notions, not something intrinsic to science.
